It's still interaction though so it's still, technically, a game - even if it only fits the definition loosely.
A game is not defined as anything that can be interacted with. By that metric a can opener is a game.

explorable work of art

How about virtual 3-D experimental art form? Explorable work of art would be like The Great Pyramid. Maybe you've been an architect for too long?
Digital Nightfall on 2/11/2010 at 20:26
Technically, I've never been an architect.
I don't think I want to form a distinction between physical art and virtual art. The meaning of the term "explore" is up for grabs, though.

Being literal in a discussion of semantics is kind of the point.
Don't you have some paint chips you should be eating?

DE is quite obviously interactive fiction. It's interactive simply because the story won't be told without player input to guide their avatar through the environment. This also pretty much fits the description of puzzle-less IF, where you play a character that experiences the narrative, observes details at will, and pushes the story forward if by no other means than simply moving forward.
And IF, as a genre, belongs to video gaming. Join the dots.

Oh, yeah. I love the Lead-based ones best.

Interactive movie, explorable art - who gives a shit? Whatever you categorize it as, it's still the same experience and the same values. Isn't trying to box "art" into nifty little and separable boxes basically counter productive to what art is supposed to be?
This, among many reasons, is why I've grown to loathe the world of academia.
