Yeah, I tried running some mods which I installed had since your initial post (like Rock 24 and The Citizen) and they were broken. Thankfully most major SP mods have patches already, so it ain't all that big of a deal.

The Minerva Metastasis unofficial patch is a bit shit, but Adam "I don't know how to playtest" Foster has promised to release an official patch.

oh god are you still going on about that
brotip: you suck, not the game, you didn't even know how to take down a gunship properly and you took the sentry gun WITH you wtf?
EvaUnit02 on 23/7/2010 at 04:17
cool story bro
I was referring to the severe lack of cues in regards to puzzles, obstacles and the like, it was pretty terrible. Anyway you're just in denial because you can't handle criticism levelled against your sacred cow mod.

If you're going to drag out a 4chan meme try using one appropriate to the conversation. Otherwise you are DOING IT WRONG.
And of course you drag out the typical HURR YOUR A FANBOY argument, which is par for the course with you- for all the fact that you accuse me of sweeping generalizations, jumping to conclusions, etc. you sure do a lot of that yourself. I fully admit there was one spot where I got stuck, during the escape portion. But see, that was my fault- you break a piece of girder to open a door, that should be clue enough that you break another girder to bring a platform crashing down. But news flash, fuckblock, just because you weren't paying attention doesn't mean the cues weren't there. Box of grenades, Minerva telling you to destroy the energy thingies, HMM I WONDER.
I find it hilarious that the guy who cries so much about consolitis needs to have his hand held to get through a fucking 2-hour HL2 mod.

Throw out personal attacks all you like, the design flaws of Metastasis are glaringly obvious and are amateur mistakes common to mods.

I've just played through the HL2 single-player mod
Minerva: Metastasis, and it really made me realize how valuable the Valve approach to level design is. Sure, it can be a bit excessively formulaic at times, but they do a genius job of making sure the player's brain is always loaded with the right information to proceed smoothly.
Now, Minerva is apparently the most highly praised HL2 single-player mod around (not that there's a lot of competition). And yet, I kept encountering situations where it wasn't at all clear what I was supposed to do next. Half the time I pressed a button, I'd have no idea what just happened, or where I was supposed to go next. The whole mod was full of these little moments where I stopped having fun because I felt like I wasn't on the "right" path.
So the Valve method of always keeping the player focused and on track does have some merit.
It's so typical of you to take quotes out of context or only choosing selective examples to try to undermine valid points.
Here's some example of some of the poor design choices in Minerva.
Quote:
Or how about the part where you have to wait for a door to open whilst Stalker's fire precision lasers at you? There's absolutely no visual or aural indication that you have to wait for the door to open.

There were others too, like blowing open the transport door after meeting the first Zombine. If Athena hadn't have sent another email after awhile of being stuck in that fucking room I probably would've just resorted to a Youtube Let's Play for directions.
You can tell that Foster half-arsedly added these hints at the last minute, instead of getting off his arse and fixing them properly. Hopefully his time at Valve has taught him how to playtest properly or even how to design his scenarios so that this shit doesn't happen in the first place.
EDIT: And Christ, would you get over the whole Brothers in Arms subtitle title font size thing already? But any and all criticism I had for Monolith and FEAR 2 was and still is valid though.
june gloom on 23/7/2010 at 09:16
Not really, no. And I didn't actually mention Brothers in Arms, gj
And um, one guy agreeing with you (including/especially ZylonBane) doesn't make you correct. Especially since 99% of those buttons specifically have video screens nearby telling you what they did and/or Minerva sometimes tells you too.
Minerva's not perfect. There's a few things towards the end where what to do isn't clear. But you're selling it far too short, which is hilarious because 99% of your problems are A) you weren't paying attention or B) you were doing something wrong, i.e. the gunship, which leads me to wonder how you got through vanilla HL2/E1/E2 at all.
if Minerva were so buggy and so bad then why is it the most highly praised mod? One would think it'd instead be relegated to the bottom of the pile. Hmm, how strange.

I'd be surprised if he charged money for it, given that the game design, writing, etc. is all Dan Pinchbeck. Presumably he'd need to get permission and develop some sort of revenue sharing model.
Too lazy to find the source at the moment, but Dan has said that since all his work is for research purposes, he considers it all to be public domain, and people can do with it what they want.
Edit: I became less lazy - (
http://gamesmodding.com/chat-show-dan-pinchbeck-and-korsakovia) "I still think I'm so lucky to have Rob rebuilding Esther and doing such an amazing, amazing job. Anyone wants to take on Korsakovia, I'd be delighted to let them have it... - also, as far as I'm concerned, this is all open source, public domain stuff, so I'll take whatever people want to give."

Awesome, then.

Yeah looks great.
The pedant in me is saying "why the hell have breakers there?" though. It may look nice but it makes no sense at all. This doesn't help immersion for me.
