Penny Arcade is very apt today.
"I guess they accidentally released an early version of Dead Island."
"How early are we talking?"
"Everyone on the island is still alive."

I haven't seen anything that screams "Alpha version" - but then I didn't get to play until I got home from work, and apparently a patch dropped stat.
I'm still not sure how I feel about the game. Forget bugs - the game has poor design decisions all over the place. Of the 4 'classes', 1 specializes in ultra-rare guns. I'm at the end of section 1, and I've found 1 gun. It had 1 bullet, and I haven't found anymore. The throwing guy is basically unplayable if you ever intend to play multiplayer - the second you toss an item, it becomes grabbable and all good throwing weapons are good melee weapons. Thus, kiss anything decent good bye if you use it.
That leaves the asian stabbity girl and the big black bashing dude. Thing is, stabbing weapons are much less common then smashing weapons, and they break three times as fast.
Looting takes time. About a quarter to a half second to pick up an item, more if you need to open a container first. But you have to do this all the fucking time because weapons break so quickly. It wastes your time far too often. Compare that to the similar borderlands, where you could pick up every item in a 5 foot radius by holding down the grab key for that length.
Despite that, it actually is kind of fun. There's actually decent reason to aim for something other then the head, which is more then I can say for any other locational damage system I've seen. You get some interesting attacks as you level up - the instant death curb stomp for one - and combat feels right.
But with so much else in the game wrong? It's going to be a like it or despise it deal, and I expect despising it will be the common reaction.

so my friend and i bought this on release day (ps3) and will be playing it extensively. we are definitely on the 'love the game' side. personally i think the eurogamer and joystiq reviews are garbage.
its crazy how much misinformation is swirling around the game right now. the guns arent nonexistant you just dont run into them until act 2. the resort is not the entire world theres new areas in each act. zombies match the level of the host not the highest level player. also the throwing expert isnt useless if you play with people you know that wont take your stuff lol.
i totally admit the game has a lot of areas it could have smoothed out so i really hope theres a sequel. destructoids Jim Sterling put it best when he ranted for 2 pages about its flaws and summarized saying its "undeniably fun".
also something people arent giving it credit for that they should be is the world looks great and the soundtrack is very nice. the music in the church is eerie and whenever i wander around the beach i feel like i should be arguing with a korean guy.

lmfao @ not liking dead island for that sarcastic "great level design" pic. its the floating apple glitch all over again.

Stupid Poles can`t even put a simple game together. Good thing other open worlds like New Vegas, Stalker, Gothics etc were flawless & stable on the release.
