I had that problem too.
I went twice through the cellar before finding that....

Most unexpected,
hard at first to figure out where I needed to go, and it sure wasn't North!
After doing some extensive door-to-door lockpicking, there was a guy holding a chair, he wasn't letting go, that gave me a surprisingly good laugh and repeated wallops.
It was fun playing this one, the archers gave me a run for my life!, including the guards on the walls.
HAs anyone also been experiencing fast AI modes while playing.
I was running really fast then would slow down some, over and over again in different areas.

EDIT: I figured it out. No help needed.
Original post - Stuck near the beginning.
I found the rope arrow and note and the piece of wood sticking out of the hillside. Climbed up and then dropped into a huge pit on two ropes, but how do I get out of this area? The two paths leading away from the pit are blocked.
Solution:
Clue 1 - Near the end of one of the tunnels there is a boulder.

Clue 2 - Not far from this boulder you can see a recess in the ceiling.

Clue 3 - There's a button in this recess. You can open a hatch if you hit the button with your arrow.

Clue 4 - You need to play more Thief if you haven't figured it out by now.
One of the worst FMs I've ever played. Can't even get past the first few minutes of gameplay. DELETE!

I agree with you Ricebug,...very frustrating?!
I cant find the way through the watertunnel in the begining?!
Keep drawning all the time searching for "something" to open the hatch with???????????????????????
ricnor on 10/1/2006 at 08:00
Every aspect of stealth is gone in this FM, the AI sees me everywhere, even if the gem is dark???
Usually I don't complain about FMs, but this one is hard not to.

Come on, folks, this mission is six and a half years old. Dromed had only been available for something like two months. Back then only a very few folks had mastered even ten percent of the wizardry required to make the missions that everyone seems to take for granted today.
Nightwalker on 10/1/2006 at 15:19
Ummmm....Sorry to contradict you, Jason, but the mission was issued in October of 2004 for it's only just over a year old. It IS rather basic and a bit annoying in spots but I still had fun playing it. We can't expect them all be like Ominous Bequest.

I added it to thiefmissions.com in 2004 because that's when I was first made aware of it, but the original release date was August 5, 1999:
2004.03.01 - Added to archive. This is an old Thief 1 mission I just became aware of.
