Console version patches have to go through an extra layer of validation.
Another reason why I don't mind the use of Steam vs. GFWL. GFWL itself was the reason why BS2's single player DLC almost didn't get released for the PC at all.
Validation isn't necessarily a bad thing, but we don't exactly need GMP-level compliance implemented for fucking video games.

Yeah, I know. But it seems like Eidos is waiting until the Missing Link DLC is released, and at the same time they'll roll console patches in with that. To save money. Rather than it being certification holding things up so long.
Even if Nixxes wasn't putting out patches: People like to bitch about problems with games on the PC, but the one thing they forget is that often times the end-users can do something about it themselves. Or the community can put their heads together and come up with fixes. (e.g. ENB series stuttering fix, removing piss filter.) While on a console, you are screwed until the developer issues a patch through XBL or PSN.
BTW: Has anyone noticed that the latest Steam patch version 633 has further sped up loading times? Some levels now only take a second or two to load! :D

Maybe I'd check, but my Steam installation decided to spontaneously combust in a fatal error. Again.

Maybe if you stopped directing the entire weight of your venomous ire towards it, it'd respond to your efforts with an equal amount of affection?
Really though, I know that Steam isn't perfect and I've had it flake out twice in a couple of years for no reason, but I sure as hell haven't had as many problems, or any as serious as you've run into.

I honestly have begun to suspect he's making some of it up. Either that or he's just blowing little things completely out of proportion.

I wish I were. But I'm not. A few days ago I couldn't start up DX:HR since it was giving me a message saying "The game is currently unavailable. Please try again later.", to which I seriously wanted to respond "What do you mean it's unavailable, it's sitting right there on my hard drive, you asshats!"
Now, it's a fatal error about not being able to load platform modules or something. Which, upon googling it, has been randomly happening to people least since 2008.
Also, before all that, I noticed that just like disabling autoupdates does practically nothing now, neither does disabling cloud support: upon exiting Steam it would display a window saying "finishing Steam cloud synchronization" from a few seconds, to a few minutes to an indefinite amount of time ("not responding" in the task manager).
