And for the vast majority of people (who indeed won't even fucking notice automatic updates, let alone nerdrage at them), the answer is "no".

If you hate it so much don't use it. I think some our traffic laws are nonsense but that doesn't stop me using the roads. There are much bigger issues to get enraged about than a software update you didn't want.
The only reason to dislike auto-updates is if it messes something up and more often than not it doesn't. In fact updates that cause mess ups are rare and if that's what you're moaning about then piss off to robot land where no one makes mistakes ffs.
If there was something really inherently wrong with Steam, like there is with some other DRM systems, I'd understand your pov. But there isn't so you just come across as pathetic.
