Once you install the game, Steam will force you to download the patch anyway.

There is no other version.

The problem is, you can buy the game from one source or another, but you can't get it without Steamworks.

Sure, it's Squeenix' decision to use the lock, but it's Steamworks which even provides such an option in the first place.

All this, thanks to the magic of Steam

The fact that some people refuse to buy Steam-infested games.

If I wanted a game on fucking Steam, I'd buy it on fucking Steam.

Dia, you'll probably want the patch anyway. It speeds up loading times by quite a bit, which were sort of ridiculous pre-patch.

How many times do I have to explain this?
After you install a game, Steam automatically starts downloading patches, and only allows you to play the game once they're installed. Only AFTER it's updated with all patches currently availabe can you set it not to update any more.

Yeah, I'm with van Hellsing on this. Why would I want to have the game load faster? Eh? WHY WHY?
Why would I want anything that enhances my fun?
You tremendous prick.

While for the most part having your games automaticaly update is a nice convenience, there have been patches for games that break more things than they fix, so having the option to choose whether you want to play patched or not isn't all that bad.

hello: I bought DXHR in retail. I inserted the disc. it started steam. I disabled "UPDATE" before confirming the installer. I got the version BEFORE the recent one. Only AFTER i changed to "UPDATE" it started patching. maybe it does not work with older games but brand new ones or RETAIL: YES.
DID THE SAME FOR STALKER so I could play Priboi.
