System Specs: XP-Sp3; ATI Radeon HD3850 1mg vid mem (drv.9.2); CPU AMD Athlon 64X2 5400+ 2.8Ghz; Creative X-Fi Gamer; Pioneer DVD combo; 630W PS; and a 23" Samsung WS VGA/DVI *using DVI hookup (1440x900 or 1920x1080 res only).
I am very limited on tech issues but tried my darndest to install and use the two mods recommended...DDFix and Widescreen patches. I can't seem to be able to set my screen res to take. When I try to run the .bat file and type the appropriate res. (in this case the first one as I have desktop set to that) and used the 100% default, click y and it says cannot find T2.exe and shows its looking for 2662400 bytes and miine is 250438 not installed due to errors (no matching .exe) Widescreen Mod for Dark Eng. Game V6.
I installed DDFix first and clicked the Gui.exe but of course my resolution choices were not there. Then I tried the above regarding WS mod. with no success. So then I opened ddfix.ini and typed in my resolutions. Then I opened cam.cfg with windows notepad as well but had to add in the line regarding screen-size and typed in same res.
The game will play but each time I use the .Esc key message shows up on game screen that it is unable to set my requested screen res. or similiar. I am totally at a loss and haven't the foggiest idea what to do????
The game is natually running 1.18, I manually installed (from previous copies I had from before) the convict.osm/scripts/tnh/gen/and NVScripts. I think there might be a newer ver. for NVS but it's not that important at the moment.
Now for the last problem currently. I have the Eclipse keyboard by Seitek and it's USB connected. The game refuses to recognize the ALT key. When I tried resetting my binds and need to use ALT+Backspace to clear so I can reset...it won't do it and will end up getting Backspace or some other key which my finger might have accidently hit into the current string!!! I tried and tried, both sides of the ALT key with no success. I have sortof a workaround because I have the game still installed on another much older computer and decided to copy a couple of the bind files and the user.bnd file and emailed them over to this machine. Put the key blind files into the save folder and user.bnd into game folder. I've done something similiar to this before and figured it could work. Basically it is although I still had to make some adjustments. Added Ctl+(key) to the binds where I had used Alt+(key) in order to get those functioning close to what I liked. One of the bind files that I copied over however doesn't show up for some reason and it was in proper numerical sequence to the ones installed by the game. But at least the other one took and that's the one I have to use. I cannot even create a new bind file as such because it would still require ALT+Backspace to clear for me.
I would really like to know what's going on with that..it's nuts! I would also appreciate how to fix my game regarding my screen resolution(s)? I've tried reading a lot of the FAQ's, etc. but I cannot glean anything more that makes any sense to me. Please if you can help, keep it very simple for me. Thank you for reading. :)
UPDATE: I now have a new problem with the cam.cfg file and have posted this in another thread. Please refer to that thread about this in particular and I hope someone can help. I still need help witih the problems in this thread too. Thank you.
The Fire Eater on 24/3/2010 at 05:32
OK this is directly related to DDFix and WS patches. As I noted in the other thread about the cam.cfg file getting corrupted, I dd copy the one from the disk and replaced it into the T2 Directory. I then added in the line again for screen size. I went back here again and re-read again about how to get it all working and saw about not only using those two files but needed to also get the modified T2.exe so I did and modified the original to .old and put the new .exe into directory.
I then opened game and it started from the beginning .avi and got the menue. The screen size apparently did change and looked like it might be ok but still not sure what res I was seeing? I clicked to open my save game but when it loaded the screen was terribly corrupted plus I got the message again about not being able to set my screen res.
Sooo, I went back into the game files and checked that both my screen size settings were still there, which they were. Then I thought, well maybe I needed to try and use the WS.bat file again. This is what that screen basically says:
Patched thief2.exe <2662400 bytes>
Copying and patching 1 file
thief2.exe <2662445 bytes> not found, but found 2662400 bytes, skipping..
Patched cam.cfg
Copying and patching 1 file
Patched ddfix.ini
Savijng This Log: WIDESCREEN\DARKWIDESCREEN.TP2 0 0 Installed ~Widescreen Mod for Dark Engine Games v6~
SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED
Now why the difference in the byte count for the Modfied T2.exe vise the one the WS mod was looking for only the authors can explain that. However, I had a terrible game screen and I don't know now what to do about this. The only thing I saw in the DDFix.ini file was a reference to where to find the textures and not sure if I understood it correctly, but I changed that line to read:
E:\Thief2\res\ddfix\ since that is where the game and files are. If this is not the manner in which to fix the corrupted screen then I don't know whatelse to do. Consequently I now have to wait for someone to read this thread and offer some advice cause I'm at a dead-end for trying anything more. It was very strange to get that far with good screens (.avi, menue) and then blat! Textures completely blown. So I again ask, plead if you will...please come to my rescue and Garretts. Thank you.

Try downloading the (
http://www.saleck.net/Downloads/Thief2-TheMetalAge/DDFix-Thief2.zip) pre-patched Thief2.exe from the DDFix thread again.
What resolution are you trying to play the game at?
If it's anything other than 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, or 1600x1200, then it won't work without the Widescreen mod.
The Fire Eater on 25/3/2010 at 10:40
Hi NV thanks for reply. I think you might need to read both of my posts regarding these problems due to the fact I have specified what resolutions I am able to only use with my monitor and I know I need and have the wide screen patch. :)
However, as you might also see that I got a different byte count that I copied directly from the WS patch window regarding the T2.exe patch that was posted in my previous message. So If you want me to re-download prepatched T2.exe and I have the other one already in the directory and it's been patched (sortof by the .bat file for WS), how am I supposed to do this without mucking it all up?
Please give me a step by step what to do. I have not reopened the game since I did those last actions after it was suppposedly patched. I've been reluctant to mess with it any more till I get absolute instructions and now since you want me to do the T2.exe over again makes it even more confusing for me to attempt without knowing exactly what procedures to take. I shall wait for your advice or whoever might be willing to help me out further with this. :)

About the keyboard, I use a Saitek Eclipse II and I have no trouble at all with Thief on it.

Well, that's normal. The script checks for two types of .exe file and applies the appropriate patch for the type found, skipping another one. If you had 2662445 bytes .exe, it would look like:
thief2.exe <2662400 bytes> not found, but found 2662445 bytes, skipping..
Patched thief2.exe <2662445 bytes>

...

RE: keyboard...well I don't understand why mine doesn't respond to ALT keys? I don't have many games on this machine and so I haven't played the other two I have for awhile and can't remember if I use ALT keys with them as I don't usually bind them in...I don't care to use them as a rule and only use sparingly for Thief...like ALT+s for save, ALT+l for load and ALT+w for lean forward and that's it, but now have to add in and substitute the CTL key and of course the loss of clearing bind fields. :(
RE: the resolution and WS/DDFix byte count, etc. Well if there are two different modified T2.exe byte counts in one program that kindof doesn't make sense to me. Why would it be done that way? I thought each one was made unique to whichever game/and or if you use DromEd? I also stated that I copied exactly what it said not as you had suggested?
As I said however, since I made the so-called patch seemingly work but had this conflicting message, I was leary of opening the game again for fear of messing things up further. I'm not even sure if my save might have gotten corrupted because of the way it looked all blotched up. It was absolutely horrible looking. I do have a backup however in another folder for them so I guess I could replace them if needed. I'm not the bravest person when it comes to this stuff and was taking my life and Garrett's in my hands and hoping for the best without totally destroying all. :D
So I guess I'll take the chance again and see if it will play correctly and say a prayer to the game gods that it will.
If by some stroke of luck it will, then my next objective will try to get Darkloader installed and setup...gah! I sure hope it will go smoother and without any further adjustments as I have read about ppl having problems running some of the FM's with these patches? But one step at a time. :)
Wish me luck!
UPDATE: Well I sortof have mostly good news and a little bad. Good news..GAME PLAYED. No corrupted game screen and res was set to my specs! :)
Bad news...after playing for several minutes the game/computer crashed down and shut-off. I'm not suggesting this is exactly T2's fault as I've had problems with another game, specifically Sacred 2. However that issue (heat related generally) but had been mainly fixed with turning around a fan and putting in a very slightly larger one, etc. But then there were issues with that game as well and have stopped playing it for quite awhile. I have Messiah of D&M and currently been playing Risen for a bit. I had/have no problems with playing them. The card still gets warmer than it probably should but I've had no shut downs with Risen which I have played for several hours at a time. I even have it set to my highest res..1920X1080. :) Using only 1440X900 for Thief, which is the same as my desktop. So I'm stuck cause I don't know what to do about this now? Don't tell me to SAVE often, LOL, cause I already do. :D
Re: Keyboard function...in my modified bind file I have it set to use the "N" key to RUN which I used on the old computer I copied the files from as mentioned in another area in these messages. Tried using it to test and now it won't work unless I also press my move forward key with it, actually don't know if it's even recognizing the "N" key and only the move forward key? I never had to hold two keys at once for that sortof thing, although there is another key bind for "run forward" which I really never had it set before because just the bind for RUN worked like it was supposed to and never felt I needed the other one. This time I did set it but to work with a completely different key, so I don't know why my "N" key isn't responding the way it always did before? I'm having to do the same thing with the "creep" key (g) and need to use two keys at the same time although he is creeping. Just the "g" key alone won't work without the move forward key with it? This really has me baffled why this is acting so different?
So thanks again for offered help and if anyone has any further suggestions about these remaining issues at least so far...feel free! :)

There are plenty of releases of T2 and usually thief2.exe files from different releases differs from each other too. Widescreen Patch covers two of them that are most widespread. If I were writing this program, I'd perform some internal check before writing anything to the log just so the user wouldn't be bugged by some false error messages, but I'm not the author and I don't know all specifics. Generally, if you're seeing "Installed successfully" message in the end, it means that thief2.exe is properly patched.

You can always pack the whole game into the archive and burn it onto a CD or any other reliable media.

Overheating is a separate issue, so I suggest you to make a new thread for it in (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=81) Technical & Troubleshooting Arena. They may ask you to make photos of your computer case, suggest some testing/monitoring/tuning software, etc. Just remember that Thief-2 always makes your CPU and video card to run at full load regardless of the resolution (it just increases FPS).
As for the keyboard, first of all check that there are no programs running in the background that may use keyboard keys. It may be keyboard layout switchers, translators, spellcheckers, etc. I had a program that used ALT+mouse click to make any window to be minimized to system tray. Sadly it affected all other games and programs that used ALT key too.
Second, there are action keys and modifiers in Thief-2. Walk, Run forward, Walk forward slowly, Move left, Move right are action keys. Run and Creep are modifiers that make a character to move faster or slower while pressed with the action key.
The *.BND files are actually text files and can be edited with Notepad or any other text editor. The general format is folowing:
; Title
bind
key actionbind
key +
actionbind
key+
key actionA "+" before
action usually means that the action is performed while player is holding a button (moving, leaning etc).
"Title" is a text appearing at the Load bindings screen.
Strings are sorted in alphabetical order usually, but it's not mandatory.
So, for moving these actions are present for moving forward:
+walkfast (actually, run)
+walk
+forward
+walkslow (veeery slow)
And these modifiers:
+runon (rises all moving speed in any direction to maximum)
+creepon (reduces moving speed in half)
You can also delete strings with mappings that you don't plan to use.

@DJ Riff
Thank you very much for your helping me to try and figure some of this out. Please take another look at these remaining questions cause I'm still confused about some of this.

No I don't have anything running as you suggest to the best of my knowlege. On my task bar are Icons for Internet connection, ATI's CCC, Yahoo's shortcut, Creatives' control panel, McAfee's virus scanner, printer, and a modified program for substitute clock ILO MS's.

Yes I understand the basics of the + a key (as in I actually now have to use Ctl+s for my QS function) but those other keys that I did not program for (bind) as in having to use "a" + "n" to make him run now. As I said before, I only needed to use "n" to make him run? "a" is my normal move forward key that I have always used. Ever since Quake days I have always changed those bind keys as I don't like to use that set-up. So again I don't know why this has changed? I didn't do it!
I shall try to see if I can open those bind files and take a look but don't really know if I can do anything with them without messing them up since the game has the "user bind" file connected to the config that I am currently using. Since I might modify something from within I don't know what to do to make that work? That is, it would be a new bind file, so how would I be able to save it, load it and use it? Please explain the steps I would need to do to when I'm in Controls for my current bind keys. Go to: ? Then: ? In other words, how would I get it to override my current config, save it and have the "user bind" see it since I wouldn't have made the changes from wtihin the game bind section itself?

Lastly, I don't know whatelse to do regarding this potential problem as I have no other solution. I cannot get into any of those air-cooling products that I've seen advertised...i.e. liquid cooling, etc. I also wouldn't be able to take any pictures. No camera, scanner etc. I have no fan adjustment program in my system. A player from another game forum suggested once a program called CUPID, but don't know if that would be of any use. I tried SoftSandra once but it could not test everything..for some reason it didn't like the way my vid card was set-up although nothing unusual was done to it? My Motherboard does accept ATI's card but if I wanted SLI I would have to use nVidia's but have no desire to do that. I did confirm using ATI's card with MB manuf. Gigabyte.
I guess the only other solution would be to freeze myself out by using fan/s in my computer room! :D I do have one fan running but maybe get another one and have a wind storm going on. LOL OK that's it for now and shall wait to hear from you or ? again. Ciao

I copied these from my bind file into a .txt. file, sorry but I have no other way to show, don't and won't use other web sites...My space or like and even taking a screenshot of this I have no means to post it in.

bind down +backfast (any arrow keys are not used but guess it's minor)

TOOK OUT these F-key binds, not envolved.

bind joy_axisx +joyxaxis
bind joy_axisy +joyforward

If it isn't then I don't seem to have any other selection to disengage the Orb otherwise. Wouldn't camerahome be incorrect anyway and should read: bind enter "inv_select cameragrenadehome" for the way I would want to bind it?)
bind keypad_star "inv_select cameragrenade" (I don't use this since I have the "y" key for this)

bind n +runon (This is the run key I'm having problems with, won't work without "a" key with it? Really is difficult because I need other finger free to take crouch off as I get behind target to prepare for BJ'ing on moving NPC.)
bind o objectives
bind p zoomoutfull (Don't know about this command, I didn't set it and just have always use [ or ] and can't actually remember seeing it in bind fields?)

bind space +jump
bind t +forward (Don't know what this key/action is about or what it's keyed to in game bindings?)
bind tab next_weapon
bind u +slideon (Not sure about this bind why it would be needed with my other keys/mouse?)
bind v lookcenter
bind v+alt+shift dark_version (Don't have any idea about this command at all? I don't even think this shows in the bind fields and can't use Alt key so what would it be for?)
bind w+alt +leanforward (This is same thing as QS/QL problem, can't use Alt key-delete?)
bind w+ctrl +leanforward
bind x +turnrightfast
bind y "inv_select camgren" (Well this seems to have also been used to bring up the "Orb" (keypad *) and I guess I could use either one, same thing with spellout question?)
bind z +turnleftfast
THE REST HAVE NO INVOLMENT so deleting for space. This is pretty much my concerns with key binds and if I make whatever changes discussed and advice given...would I need to also make the same changes in the game bind file? The bind file I'm using here is the one located in my Save game folder. And what about the "user.bnd" file? In other words, what are all the steps I should take to make this all work? :D Thank you.
