It's definitely a renderer issue in the engine.

http://j.photos.cx/thiefshock-1b1.jpgDetails I can't really give because, well, I have no idea what could be causing it. I'm running a gtx275 (it also happened on my 8800gt) with the absoloute latest drivers (rolling back too far would remove support for my card) I'm running ddfix and, in the case of shock2 all of the unofficial patches and the mod manager fixes.
On the plus side, the stars show up in the sky in thief 2...
Thief 1 (gold) run in software mode looks about as fine as an old game run in software mode can, except without a frame limiter it's still not what I'd call in a playable state.

my point-it seems like you are the only one with this problem (other geforce users are able to run the games fine),that means the problem is probably on your side..see here: (

It's incredibly unlikely that all three games' shadow maps would become corrupted in the same way-- especially since i played through the same Sshock2 install just fine on my old 7900gs and the shadowmaps aren't corrupted in Thief Gold's software renderer.
I know nothing about how ddfix actually works, but I'll take a stab at saying that an overhaul of the lighting system, which people were talking about earlier in this thread, would likely fix the problem-- or at least, circumvent it.

hmm, can't argue with that-my second shot would be corrupted drivers, especially if you have upgraded your graphics card without reinstalling windows.if you have a spare hdd around, maybe you could do a clean install of windows (leaving your current install intact) just to test this theory..otherwise,I'm out of ideas.

Dark either does two pass (texture, lightmap separated) or one pass modulative render of the terrain. Maybe on this particular setup it uses the first one and does not manage to get it right? Maybe there is some configuration key to force the first or the second...

Kind of ironic that we moved to a dev thread to keep the support thread clean and now the dev thread is being used for support. :p

I think a mod should split all stuff related to bhlaab's problem to a separate thread (as its clearly not ddfix related).

Sorry, that wasn't my aim. I don't think any amount of troubleshooting will help, I've tried just about everything already. I thought I'd place a bid on a new version of ddfix to solve the problem with a new light/shadowmap renderer

Would it be possible to create a patcher for the Dark games? One that would take the features from DDfix and the Widescreen patch, and whatever other issues there may be (like Orgy's texture pack, for instance), and present a user with a choice menu of what they would like to fix and change.

That sounds great. Whenever ODE is completed and ppl are able to play thief 2 on any OS, we'll keep that in mind.
BTW, has anyone heard of (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS/2) OS/2? I think that'd be an interesting system to test ODE on, if not a little lengthy to get to work correctly.
EDIT: Well cripes, call me an idiot. This is the DDFIX thread. Well, at the very least, ddfix and ODE are trying to reach a similar goal.
