I just finished the Dark Brotherhood quest line, which shared one of the great flaws in Oblivion: incredibly predictable storylines. As soon as I found the [SPOILER]Black hand Robe in a barrel[/SPOILER] at the home of a target, it was pretty obvious what was going on. I decided however, that my character was entirely OK with playing along - but now I wonder, could I've returned at that point to Luthien and told him what happens, or does he simply vanish from the world for plot's sake?
