WHAT

Two (high-quality-looking) Warhammer 40k games announced in a week?
It feels like Emperor Day.
I had thought Relic got shut down, glad to see they're back.
Sounds like they're trying a best of both worlds approach, taking the good ideas from DoW 2 and putting them back into a more traditional RTS, which should hopefully feel less like slowly crawling across a small map, clearing everything with fairly little challenge (which DoW 2 tended to devolve into quickly.)
It might also bring back the interest of the many who couldn't get into the second game because it was basically a completely different genre.

Holy shit, that was awesome. They sure know how to build up tension, and the whole concept, it's almost like looking at Beksinski's paintings (especially the Eldar parts).

They talk about choosing which elite units/squads you want at the start of the match, possibly in a MOBA-style "champion select", which sounds a bit like a mix between DoW2's heroes and the honour guard from the later DoW1 expansions.
They also mention DoW1-style base-building, with requisition and power and normal unit production.

Hmm. I'd have preferred sticking with how the second game did things overall. The strong RPG approach was great, leveling up the heroes was quite good and the story was more fleshed out.
I love my C&C and Warcraft's, but for 40k a RPG approach works better I think.

See, what I'd like is the action gameplay of Dawn of War 2, with the strategic layer of Soulstorm. I loved that with Soulstorm being the last in the expansions for DoW, you had access to all the races as well as the strategic layer from Dark Crusade, but expanded and improved.
The original DoW2 had some of that strategic layer but nowhere near as big and without the excellent selection of races.
I grew increasingly disappointed with later DoW2 expansions as they focussed more on story missions instead of the Risk style strategic map and the fight for resources. The RPG progression elements were cool, but didn't have a chance to flourish in the linear mission structure.

Gameplay demo from E3
Brings up some nice RTS vibes. It reminds me a bit of Starcraft 2 (but somehow in a good way.)
