There's some videogame music that fits into this category quite well. A few games soundtracks that spring to mind immediately:
* Diablo 1 & 2 (More so the first game).
* Silent Hill 1-4
* System Shock 2
* Vagrant Story - Best of the lot

This morning I listened to Autechre's Quaristice in the car and it does have one or two ambient areas, so there's some crossover.
I love that album; I think it's a little underrated, but I guess that happens when you release like a dozen records that all sound similar.
One guy who makes really interesting music using those old synthesizer sounds is (

Dia, I'm glad you like it. Most Beautiful Blue is one of my very favourites :)

Thanks to spotify I've stumbled into Solar Fields. I recognized the name from the Mirrors Edge soundtrack.
I don't know if they fit into your category, but so far I really like the stuff they did outside the game as well as in.

Man I just played Mirror's Edge again last night & especially on the Atrium and Shard levels I was reminded how awesome the music is. Something about the Shard especially, in one part of the ducts, with that music, made it a really moving level for me, up there in the very small list of levels in games that ever really moved me emotionally. Solar Field's track was part of that.

I guess (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atrium_Carceri) Atrium Carceri could be classified as Dark Ambient.
I can't recommend a particular track or album. I played all 7 or so albums over and over again 3 years ago, when I was reading Song of Ice and Fire in my bed during the winter of 2011-2012. For me it's just one huge soundtrack.
I just noticed that Atrium Carceri has done the (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgdJp5DRQ90) soundtrack for a recent game called "The Old City: Leviathan". I finally finished The Witcher 1 last week, and I've ran out of games I wanted to play. I had missed the release of "The Old City: Leviathan" last December, but I'm gonna try it out now.
