Okay, so on my second run through of the game and I've just done the dark valley but something's troubling me a little: In the last room where you get the documents in the dark valley lab the door shuts and won't open because 'someone is holding the door'. How are you supposed to get around this? The first time I played, I just blew the door down with the RPG I found in the room with that big meaty monster. This time I tried doing that a few times but it didn't seem to work. I even gave it all my vog25s, shotgun shells, hand grenades, .45s, and Abakan rounds. Eventually I got round it by jamming the door open with my RPG but this meant that the military guys who spawn inside the lab weren't there (the ones outside were though). How did other people do this bit of the game and is doing it this way likely to cause problems later in the game because I've missed a trigger? I suppose I'll find out when I get a bit further.

Remember the creature that spawns near the stairs where you get the documents? He creates flames. Shoot that guy until he dies (shotgun up-close worked great for me) and the door will open.

There was a creature?!? Well, that explains a lot. I guess the first time I did it, I must've killed this creature with splash damage from the RPG, leading me to believe I had blown the door open. Well, thanks for clearing that up.

Perhaps, but you are supposed to see a cutscene after killing it.
It looks like a floating orange ball by the way, comes down those stairs when you get near them. You hear it scream shortly before that.

That's the usual problem with open-nature design and triggers that move the story forward. I don't know where did you get that rpg before the dark valley lab, but the way how you managed to get out of there wasn't foreseen by the designers ;) +1 point for the open-ended design. -1 point for the story design.

It would have been nice if you were actually able to blow the door down. I must have somehow killed the ball creature with the rpg and the time I jammed the door open well, lets just say I'm suprised that rpg was able to keep that massive blast door from closing. Fortunately I still did it 'properly' the first time I played the game or I would have missed a big plot element.

If you didn't see a cutscene after firing the RPG, then you didn't kill the creature, you killed the door. :p

I'm thought the cutscene plays after you pick up the documents, irrespective of the fire djinn.

I picked up the documents and ran like hell to the open door that led to a ramp, then I came to a room with some machinery, two locked doors and closets with a few items on the shelves.
But later I tried to kill it and when I achieved my goal, voila, a cutscene. :erm:

There're lots of poltergeists in that area lifting and throwing stuff at you. You didn't notice at all?
They're surprisingly easy to kill.
