I had it in mind to try and test DS on my new-old laptop. It's got an Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M. The installer says it's all right, and the FAQs (both that of the game and the forum), don't list it as non-compatible. Yet I still get the "Flash Failed to Initialise" message, or not even that.
What am I to do?

I seem to recall hearing that Thief DS simply will not work on a laptop...

It works on my laptop. A bit slow, but it works. I think your thinking of Vista, which DS has trouble working on.

1. your in the wrong section.
2. flesh failed to initialize is a known error.
- a. have you updated TDS to version 1.1
- b. what nVidia driver version are you running.
Looking into the GT140 its actually re-branded 9600GSO whch itself is a re-branded 8800GSO and all 3 support Pixel Shader 1.1 and higher so are capable of playing TDS.

I've yet to try TDS on my 2008-era laptop with the gf9800gtm. Whenever I want to play it, I just use an old junker with an athlon 3200+ and gf7600gs. The game runs fine on that old hardware. I do seem to recall something about TDS saying "Laptops are not supported." though.

Its a grand sweeping statement on the part of the devs, most laptop just dont have the grunt or the video card to cope. but yours and HG gfx cards are more than capable.

Okay, I've patched my DS and updated my Nvidia driver. Still no effect.

Ok, well in that case its because the card is a quadro 140 rather than a geforce 140. I didnt originally think it would be a problem, but it looks like thats the cause. To verify it is that you could soft bios the quadro (Ive read about this being done with older off-board(as in PCI-e or AGP) qaudros and I dont know if this can be done on a discreet(on-board) version.
Soft bios is a way of fooling the OS into think you have the Geforce version instead of the Quadro etc..
[update]
Ive just had another thought, as its a dell, have you updated the bios of the laptop to the latest version..?

It's a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad.
