For the first lich you encounter, you can 'cheat' a little by getting him to walk over the lava. Can't remember what happened to me when it happened (the second time I went through the game), but hey, he died crossing it!

I know this is not the kind of reply you probably wanted, but getting that shield is not really necessary. Just steal the krahoz. It's more fun anyway. Kill the girl, get her key, and enter through the back way with your bow and arrows. That's my favorite part of the whole game actually. I find using poisoned arrows or the fireball bow to be particularly enjoyable. I think you can also pickpocket the key from her if you have a very high stealth skill. You can then kill the lich at your leisure when you have more powerful weapons or spells.

That happened to me, as well. I was running from it and headed over the lava (with the cover closed). I looked backed and it had just stopped on the cover and was dying. Don't know what happened, but it was alright by me. Hope I got the XP for it.

When I ran into this Lich I had gone down into the next level of the crypt beforehand so when I came back to where he was I was not excepting it. I swear Am Shagar whispered "Oh Shit" at the same time I did. It was just dumb luck that the stairs I ran up were on the side were the lava pit was still open.
And the Lich in the secret room in the Temple can be trapped in that room and pelted with arrows. (The arrows go through the door if you're far enough away.)
But the two later on... still trying to come up with a way to kill them...

Ive always found that placing a magic Barrier between me and the mob and running away and hiding works really really really well. this allows me to achieve a position where I can harm them and they cant harm me. This usually involves me lobbing arrows in sneak attacks, then running away and hiding again. I guess that spells can be substituted for arrows but make sure you have a barrier memed for quick cast.

I didn't find the liches all that hard *shrugs* but i was walking death, so..... by the time I got to face liches and such I already had a couple of pieces of mithril armor, and I think a magic plate piece, as well as a good shield and a mithril saber... but yeah, what the guy said above is a good tactic that I've used on other things (ylsides), and it works pretty well. I do a variation though, since they keep trying to run through the barrier I keep trying to position myself to where they stay like that until i can charge up my sword attacks or load up on precast fireballs... good stuff... but magic doesn't seem to work too well on liches...

Okay... I just managed to "kill" the Lich without doing anything, or even being aware of it happening.
This too, involved the lava pits. Before I took the Shield, I opened the lava pits just to cover my back. Then, instead of going back to the big hall, I continued down to the next level. When I came back up, halfway up the stairs to the puzzle room, I was suddenly hit with some kind of spell (life drain?) that removed 99% of my health and mana. Then another spell (maybe curse?) with something rotating above me for a few seconds.
And then, nothing happened. I healed myself and waited some more. Nothing. When I finally dared to investigate, I found the Lich face down in the lava pit, even deader than usually. It appears he fell there all by himself (a bug or a feature of the AI?).
So, by being a complete coward, and hiding in a stairway, I had no trouble to overcome something the more brave have struggled with :D
That drain-spell-thingy was nasty, though. I had the Shield and a Daarka-ring (or somesuch), both with plenty of magic resistance, and I just about survived. Without them, I believe, I would have been dead on the spot.

I had the best luck with liches either by pounding them continuously so they don't get a blow in, or by getting them stuck behind something like a sarcophagus and shooting them with arrows. That's how I got the lich in the temple, by running into the corner, and lich-boy just ran back and forth on the other side of the coffin like a sucker while I zapped him with bows and spells.

I usually go at them with everything I've got, which generally consists of fireballs and sword blows. While they're a pain in the ass and yet horrifyingly cool, they aren't too much of a problem. The only thing they do that can really hurt you is paralyze. Oh, and to avoid having to ever deal with the zombie that the lich summons, simply run far away as soon as you see the summon animation thing. The lich will follow you, but the zombie will not.
If you ever need to heal, make sure you do it when he is casting a spell at you a little way off and not close to you whaling away.
