Damn Lich. - by Big Brother

I have just retrieved the Shield of the Ancients or whatever from the crypt.
Fighting the lich seems impossible. My strategy is this: Lead the damn thing to the puzzle room and jump onto the puzzle. The lich hangs out on the lower level, tossing spells and such, but it can't actually hit me. I pelt it with arrows and fireballs.
However, the asshole can just kill me. A spell, and I fall over dead. No warning, no way to stop it. If the lich wants me dead, I'm dead.
This makes me very, very angry, as this is NOT fun. It's just frustrating.
Is there any way to stop this? I'm a thief character with only a limited grasp of magic (a few protect spells and such).
The first time I did this, it was easy, but at that time I was playing sans the two patches that have been released.

This was the hardest boss for me in the whole game. I had to reload to a previous save about 50 times before I beat this Lich.
Other than that, it seems to be mostly luck at beating this guy.

That is so uncool.
The first time through I had no troubles, and now I don't even want to try for fear of hating the game.

Hmm. The first time round I didn't even bump on that Lich. I just used the alternate exit in that level - it leads to the cave level with the snakewomen, I recall.

If you think this Litch is hard, try the 2 in level 8!!! Try equiping Shield of Ancients to protect yourself from his Magic(20% magic resistance seems to help). Cast a spell to increase your shield protection(u may have to revert to an earlier save to prepare for this). Ignore his little undead barstards he keeps summoning and keep belting away at him. If you have any two handed weapons use the one with increased "critical" but if u do this u won't be able to equip "Shield"......Try running at him and hitting then backing up and holding left mouse down to maximise damage before u run and hit him again....I was at level 6 or 7 at this time....Didn't find magic to be of much help.
Good luck.

Simply keep your distance, and keep casting fireball (replenishing mana with potions if necessary).

3-4 Disintegrate spells should also do the trick. What I usually do is fire one, run, and then repeat as necessary.

Guys!!
Just goes to show there is more than 1 way to skin a cat errr!!
I didn't find Litches that hard.....but Ylsides.....!!! They is another thing....only thing I noticed about these suckers is they run around like lunatics but thenwear out and slow down....If u can survive the mad "run around U can wack them but still difficult!!!
But back to Liches....I Used "Armour" spell which seemed to help.....Plus a decent two handed sword.....never could get a real "Handle" on spell system in this game...so just belted, smashed, and otherwise blundered my way through this awesome game.
Finally in the last area where I have to defeat two more(barstards) ylsides and take on Akbaa....Time alone will tell....but this game has been a blinder.....and that comes from a RPG er from way back....I hacked my way thru ultima 4 and 10...Ultima 10 had a few glitches but this game has been a screamer from go to wo......
Here I am 57yr old fart and loving it all... Blood....guts...and all...love the bits where U cut em in half....If there is a sequel to this sucker....I hope I live long enough!!!
Cheers,

The good news is that they are actually working on the sequel at the moment. This time around they are going to include journeys into the wilderness as well.

For ylisids (sp?), I found the "set trap" spell (you need the sorta-rare mortis rune for it) to be VERY useful. Just set up 3 of those in your quick spell slots, get behind the guy, cast one manually (which should draw his attention), and then run like hell and set another trap once you hear the old one go off (you can't have 2 at once). With a 6th or 7th level magic-oriented character, it usually took me 3 traps per guy, though I'm not sure the trap damage is level-dependent. You can also use the drain life or multiple harm spells.
As for the lich... a repulse undead is great for getting past him, but he has some stuff on him which is not bad (tempus rune, golem heart).
