Sigh ... I was enjoying myself playing Anarchie Online until yesterday ... but somehow, after having played the Arx demo twice, I crave for more medieval single player game with some depth. I am reluctant to reinstall UW or UW2 (I'm not even sure whether they would run on my system), I've been through Thief,Thief2, SS2 and Deus-Ex already (Thief, Thief2 twice, and SS2 again in multiplayer mode) ...
Is there any 1st person RPG out at the moment that could make the waiting for Arx feel a bit shorter?
Yes, I know it's pathetic ;)

Tried Daggerfall or Arena? Lousy graphics by today's standards, and not nearly as interactive as Arx, but they're huge. I do mean HUGE. Not the same feel as Arx, though, if only because they're so repetetive. Morrowind is one of my most anticipated games out there right now though, and it promises to be quite a bit more detailed and interactive. There's always System Shock 1, if you can get by the awful interface. Ultima Ascension has a lot of the same interactivity, but it's pretty buggy, and kind of a lousy game, and it's not first person...
I'm in the same boat as you though. I'm now dying to play the full game. (you hear that Arkane? You can send me a full build, and I'll take it bugs and all :cheeky: ) It is really a cruel thing to do to put out a demo that's this good when the game is a month or more away... Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I'm really really glad to have played the demo :). It just makes me really dissatisfied with the other stuff out there at the moment. These games always do. I couldn't play an FPS for a while after playing Deus Ex, because they all just seemed so shallow. Same thing happened now. I just went back to playing Medal of Honor, which is a damn fine FPS in its own right, and it just felt dull and boring...

P.S. It's not really that pathetic, and also if anyone else has some more suggestions, please post 'em. I'm on the prowl for more FPRPG's too.
Just thought of one you might try. It's not the same style as Arx, but a decent game: Wizardry 8.

sigh ... oh yes ... I played Daggerfall .. back then :) The idea was great .. the implementation though less:)
I think I might reinstall Sea Dogs ... it was fun, but I grew desillusioned with it when I deleted my savefile :\
Oh well ... Good to know I'm not alone with this feeling :)

I think your best bet is to go to a different genre unrelated to the 1st person RPG....like something completely different. That way you won't be disappointed. Me, I'm way behind on consoles...I think I'll go try out some old platform games....

Commandos 2 had me addicted for several days. Extremely immersive... and, uhm.. A lot better than its predecessor if you ask me. Give that a try if you fancy doin' so.

Originally posted by Cerbera ...Ultima Ascension has a lot of the same interactivity, but it's pretty buggy, and kind of a lousy game, and it's not first person...That's all true, but it is still quite enjoyable. It has a nice UW-like feel... Lots to explore, lots of NPCs and lots of subplots.
If you're looking for a way to kill time until the release of Arx, you could definitely do worse than Ultima IX...

Have you tried Gothic? I really enjoyed the game.

True, you definitely could do worse than Ultima IX. I guess I was a little harsh on it, mainly because it was kind of a letdown at the time. There is a good feeling of adventuring in the game, though. Also, I would second sacredginmill's recommendation of Gothic. It's not as interactive as Arx, but it is still a fine RPG (you can still cook meat though, which is a nice touch.) In fact, it's kind of similar to Ultima IX in many ways, but with a little more polish.
Though I haven't played it, Warren Spector and everyone else (with the possible exception of anyone in world government looking for a new video game to blame violence and general depraved behavior on) seem to speak very highly of Grand Theft Auto 3, in terms of interactivity and creating a living breathing world. So if you have a PS2...
And since you've finished Thief and Thief 2, have you played the fan missions? Some of them are very very good, and will certainly keep you occupied...
And if you're into console-style RPG's, Anachronox is a damn fine game, and really really really funny. I know it has the whole Ion Storm Dallas stigma, but it is a really good game. (Any game where the intergalactic currency - due to a freak financial accident, mind you - is the Canadian Loonie has gotta be worth checking out).
Other games I've played recently that I've enjoyed: Jagged Alliance 2. And if you're looking for a good RPG and haven't played either Fallout or Planescape: Torment (yet MORE nameless one games), both are excellent and you can usually find a copy for pretty cheap.
Incidentally, if you use a rolling pin and an apple on bread dough in Arx, you can make an apple pie. How cool is that? And rope+the bamboo pole is a fishing pole. Haven't been able to catch any fish yet though. (Am Shaegar grumbles yet again about being hungry :weird: )
Also, another completely off the wall idea that is completely off topic. It would be great if someone could successfully make a "Life of Brian" type video game. Almost every-freaking-RPG-out-there has you being the one to save the world from this, that and the other. What if (reverts to boomingly epic video game commercial voice) "One Man Will Change The Course Of The Future... And That ONE MAN... IS... your next door neighbor." It would at least be an amusing jab at RPG's in general. I mean, what if the role I want to play is not savior of the world?
God I'm tired if that is what I'm coming up with right now...

I second the Gothic recommendation.
