Ya, I know this is the "morrowind" forum, but you know...
Anyways, I got me a 'warez' copy of Daggerfall, and I got it all extracted and stuff, only problem is it won't run under XP. If I run the dagger.exe then the game asks for my CD, if I run the nocd bat (it opens the fall.exe directly with a config file that says the cd is on the hard drive) then the dos box starts up, then closes. I've tried messing with the compatibility settings, and tried booting in the straitest incarnation of dos I can, but no luck. Anyone know how to help me, or should I just give up?

My suggestion is to dig out your old 486, or an early Pentium, running Win 95. Daggerfall ran fine on my original PC (a state-of-the-art P120. Well, it was 1996). As soon as I upgraded to a better processor, trouble started. It still ran, but for some reason I had trouble jumping and levitating. This is why I never finished the game- and I was on the final quest!
Someone may have a better solution, but mine is fairly guaranteed to work!

Have you tried to run it with a boot disk? If XP has still that option of course (even if I am a recluctant user of XP, I have still Windows 98 on another partition so...). I have a rather recent computer, and Daggerfall works fine even on XP. But Daggerfall is not a logical game, it might work fine on one compturer and would not even start on another (even if both computers are almost the same).
I forget: do you have a mouse pilot compatible with DOS ? XP does not ship with any kind of pilot for DOS game, and Daggerfall may require you to install one.
Last but not least, have you checked the z.cfg file for Daggerfall? Even if it seems unlikely, the problem might be here.
If none of the above works, I am afraid you will have to play Daggerfal in pure DOS, or find an old compturer

Even if you get into the game itself, I hear that XP causes some major flaws.
Fast processors don't cause any serious problems, if you don't mind slow levitating and a lot of jumping into walls to get the climbing to turn on ;)
Get a boot disk, and that should hopefully work.

I am using XP (sadly) but I have yet to see a problem with that OS (except of course that climbing is rather difficult to activate). I guess it varies, depending on your computer, your configuration, and other factors like the moon, your hair style, and so on ;) (Daggerfall's "logic" cannot surprise me anymore :sly:)

Yarr, Daggerfall is a truely unique game, a different experiance for every user ;). There IS another computer in the house that has a win98 partition, and I remember that working, so if I REALLY want to play then I could use that, but its kinda annoying because its in a really high traffic area, and its like, the computer for the rest of my family. Oh well, looks like its morrowind for me.

Hidden_7.....I'm sure you know this already, but I'll point it out anyway; downloading warez games, even older ones, is illegal, and admitting to it tends to meet with a frosty reception on most forums. I'd be careful if I were you, you could get into trouble, especially seeing as one of the moderators on this very forum used to work for Bethesda Softworks. I'm not having a go at you, but couldn't you try to find a legitimate copy of the game somehow? E-bay is probably your best bet.

OK, now I'm confused. I thought that warez was, I dunno, short for 'warehouse' or something, and it meant something like 'a re-issue of a really old game no longer available in its original form'. Now I see that I was wrong, and that the term means 'illegal copy'. So what is the origin of the term warez? And how are you supposed to pronounce it?

what YOU are thinking of is called abandonware (which is also illegal)
warez is what you download from sites (usually russian sites for some reason)
or famed downloaders, like napster, which allow you to download games too.
these are, if not a virus, incomplete and ILLEGAL.
i was surprised to see someone actually walking in and saying "hi, i got a warez copy of..." :)
tho it is tempting since i never saw daggerfall on ebay :(

But if Daggerfall is no longer available anywhere, and you really want to play it, what are you supposed to do? Surely, the developers ought to be pleased that someone still wants to play a game that came out in 1996- millennia ago in computer terms! It is an endorsement of the game if it still generates interest seven years later. So I'd be inclined to forgive Hidden_7.
But perhaps the reason why Hidden's game doesn't work is because it's a warez copy, and it has errors in it.
