I note that you're not actually offering a counterargument to what he said about the movie here.
How can I? It's his opinion, he's entitled to it, I just happen to disagree with him (and you, for that matter). I enjoyed the movie, it's good to see an alien flick where the humans are the bad guys for once, and I feel the director succeeded in his attempt to satirise dumb action flicks. I really don't think there's anything more that needs to be said.

Ah, you've convinced yourself of that Troopers-apologist angle too, I see. Sorry, the events onscreen clearly show the aliens as the aggressors.

Let me just make sure you're aware that you're arguing about Starship Troopers.

Yep, they sure are. It's SERIOUS, man!

The fact that Starship Troopers still causes debate after all these years is just more proof of the overwhelming subtlety of its satire and the deep intellectual base over which the drama of the movie unfolds. It is, at its heart, an insightful look into the soul of humanity, the struggle against the natural world, the need for strong and organised leadership of humanity and the search for love and understanding by the disenfranchised underdogs of society. With gore, violence and boobies thrown in for good measure.
I can understand not liking the movie, what I've never understood is how for some people dressing Doogie Howser as a SS colonel and having the bugs eat the brains of the Melrose Place guy is too subtle.

The fact that Animal House still causes debate after all these years is just more proof of the overwhelming subtlety of its satire and the deep intellectual base over which the drama of the movie unfolds. It is, at its heart, an insightful look into the soul of humanity, the struggle against the natural world, the need for strong and organised leadership of humanity and the search for love and understanding by the disenfranchised underdogs of society. With one thousand marbles, violence and boobies thrown in for good measure.
Fixed that for ya.

Well I'm sure nobody will disagree with my next daft cheesy suggestions:
Octopus
and it's doubtfully anticipated sequel:
Octopus 2
They are absolutely terrible. Quite how anyone was allowed to make a sequel is beyond me.

When I saw Starship Troopers mentioned, I probably should have sounded the ZB alert, I can't count the times I've seen him gibbering about how bad it was.
The fact is, if it was intended as a "satire" in the true sense, it failed. As a dumb cheesy action flick, it was great fun, and it had enough poor attempts at satire to make it pretty damn funny. That's all.
Oh, and for the cheese-horror factor, Critters I and II.
Moi Dix Mois on 25/2/2007 at 23:37
If the point of a film is to be sort of b-rate and cheesy, can it really count?
It's been a few years but what I remember of Critters was that it was intentionally trying to be a bit 'cult'. Grounds for automatic disqualification, surely?

Some of the horror Movies which start out okay then get to about part 10 than turn cheesy. Like "Friday 13th". Part V
I like "Nightmare on Elm street" the first two. Then they got laughable. The critters was kind of funny at first as well. Cheesy though.
The Oscars are Cheesy enough on their own!.
I found a site a while ago with a cheese rating. Starship troopers was there.
Starship Troopers
Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Starring Casper Van Diem, Denise Richards, and Doogie Hauser (er, yeah)
Sure, I read the book. Sure, I saw the movie. Sure, the movie and the book are nothing alike. But, the movie was creative and funny. I have noticed that Verhoeven uses over-the-top violence and that makes the film. Many condemned the film for that, but, get over it. Take a step back and don't read too much into it, people. It was entertaining. Come on! Sucking brains!
Alien bugs attack earth and 90210 people must save the universe. That's the plot, no kidding.
Best Line: "It sucked his brains out!"
Best Scene: The tent scene ... er, I mean the, uh, Klendathu Invasion scene! Yeah
