The inscrutable po on 26/10/2006 at 07:15
I've been walking for years as a form of exercise and relaxation. Last year I started hiking on much steeper terrain. I felt I was building up muscles but then foot pain hit me. I ignored it but it went on and on.
It was a prescription that my podiatrist refused to refill without an office visit* that got me to see the doctor about the pain. He said I was getting metatarsalgia, I think. Said I should get gels for my feet. Then recomended costumized shoes when I told him I told him there wouldn't be room in my shoes for gels.
The customized shoes (these are gigantic things that old nuns wear) look and feel like pieces of shit. They have huge amounts of room on the inside though. They cost $200 without the $70 gel inserts. Some fucking deal!
I went to foot.com. There I talked to a pedorthist (a person who fits people with orthotics, often they are involved in gambling). He said he had an insert that should fit into a normal shoe so I bought them $70. After two weeks I felt a bit better and now I feel quite good. I buy some more and then I start to feel the pain again.
I'm not asking for advice here. I'm just saying that life at a certain age seems to be all about one thing after another breaking and never being right again. Or as Schopenhauer once said, "NOOOooooooo! HORSEEEeeeeeeeee!!!"
*I hadn't seen him in ten years. He just kept letting me have refills.

How old are you, po?
I'd feel bad if I had been berating some senile old codger over the internet.
EDIT: Just realised that the title of this thread could be read as: The agony of defeat... Does this mean your going now?

If you don't like the topic, contact a mod. I read the guidelines and as far as I can see it's an appropriate topic.

Did you just post this as flamebait so that you can contact the mods? You seemed extremely quick on the draw to pull me up. I never said I didn't like your thread, I just honestly have no clue why you would post it.
The inscrutable po on 26/10/2006 at 08:20
Your post was rude, questioning whether I was senile. That's rude as though you didn't know.
Then you ask if I'm going to leave which is again, rude and you know it. It's also cowardly as you are just jumping on someone who's already being jumped on by a few others.
And of course you derailed my topic which is also rude.
I wouldn't waste my time contacting the mods... since you brought it up.

I think I know the problem. You don't understand how a forum works.
You can request people respond in a certain fashion, for instance: "has anybody else experienced this?" or "tell me a line from your favourite movie!".
But here's the thing - people can reply however they want to. This forum is community chat, and it gets a lot more leeway and freedom than the other boards on this forum. Accept this.
The 'mods' do jackshit in this particular forum subset. The ADMINISTRATORS of this board decide when somebody has gone too far, or needs to have a little time out. This is usually when a forum participant has overstepped the line heavily and repeatedly. Said offenders are generally warned gently in-thread and then often contacted personally in the form of a private message to give them the tip that they are not behaving acceptably within the very loose guidelines that the forum requires. An important part of these circumstances is to be aware that forum guidelines are not followed to the letter. Reading the forum FAQ or other potentially generic Bulletin Board procedures will not instruct you on the manner to approach and behave in this specific forum. Personal experience, a healthy dose of common sense and some measure of social skill or humour is generally a requisite for not being seen as a useless contributor.
Constantly contacting the administration of this forum which includes, but is not limited to: reporting posts, personal emails or complaining in-thread is an annoying and frowned-upon course of action. Having the nouse to handle these social dilemmas will earn respect from other members of the forum. Your continued presence on these forums is not a right; rather, a combination of the discretion of the administrators, and very importantly, the discretion of the community as an entity. Butting heads with administrators is one method of seeing you vacate the premises promptly.
Now, the primary idea behind a forum is the sharing and analysis of ideas through discussion, debate, or comparison. Posting excerpts of your life and then demanding people do not take a discussion in a certain direction is a useless and ultimately self-defeating endeavour. People can and will write whatever they want, and the course of discussion is only shaped to a certain degree by the thread starter. With this in mind, it becomes evident that the average forum member is not interested in topics that exhibit no characteristics of interest or discussion longevity. These may include "what I did today!", "My completely uninformed opinion about a random event!" or "HEY HERE'S A NEWS ITEM, LOL".
It is advisable to read and understand a collection of sizeable threads already posted in this area of the TTLG Forums. Subforums, and Community Chat above all, do not act in the same fashion as other sections of the overall system.
Continually stumbling through these forums like a fish attempting to escape its bowl will earn you nothing but scorn, impatience and dislike. If you lack the social understanding to notice why a community capable of more than just mobbing newcomers responds to your overtures in this way, you will simply continue on in your current vein of antagonism and wasted effort until you are finally banned.
When posting a thread that can invite only acceptance or criticism of some kind, personally being affronted by every reply that doesn't immediately comply with your ideals is a sure sign that you don't know how to approach these types of situations. You can either re-evaluate your current state of mind on these boards, or simply keep bashing your head against the proverbial wall! Just, please, shut the hell up about contacting the 'mods' as though that is even a remotely useful course of action.
Discussions involving a lengthy summary of your actions for only one tiny bit of discussion value typically belong on a site such as Live Journal, where people who wish to read all about your life and add one sentence of sympathy noises or meaningless drivel can visit you.

So, you ignored the advice of your doctor in favor or Internet Doctor Plus and it worked great until your feet started hurting again?
Seriously, this does seem like a big excuse to share your story (which isn't really that interesting) by tacking on a "does anyone else have stories of their bodies disintegrating at old age". Wait, actually, you never did that. You just told of your experience and then left the thread to rot.
What did you think the thread would be about? At least leave something to discuss besides your story when you go "oh i just posted this for shits and giggles no advice please okay".
