I noticed that in the Minimalist Project there are a number of custom sounds, the one I am mostly refering to being the Thief1/2 "loot frob" sound. Is there a way to have the vanilla game play that particular sound instead of the standard T3 loot frob?
I'd rather not play the game with the Minimalist Project for just that one sound, so I'm wondering if it's possible.

Welcome to our forum, first.
The solutions could be two:
1-) Recompiling the CSC files with the perl scripts you find in the editor (compileschemas.pl) after having changed the sounds you want with the older T2/T1 ones, and having extracted with DXIW Sound Drone all the wav/ogg sounds, and converted in wav/ogg (the schemas editor needs of both the ogg and wav version of each audio file) and placed them into a subfolder into Sounds --------------> Long but sure work
2-) Trying just to change the sound you want in the schema editor, and trying to change their destination on Hard Drive (by default, you will find DVD set, in that window) ---------------> not sure if it works.

Well, the second option sounds lot more within my grasp! I'll have to try it. Is the schema editor within the T3editor or a separate program?

It's in the editor, it will take a lot to start, it have to load all the schemas for first. You will find it under View->Schema Browser. Make me know if my method works, it could be useful for me too.
