I would defect to Doom3 but I've seen Dark Radiant and its an ugly thing. The doom 3 editor isn't as bad however, but that dark radiant editor is horrendous looking. In the end I might just have to settle for it though.
Just curious - are you saying it looks ugly, or have you tried it out and are saying that it functions horribly?
It sounds like you are saying that it looks ugly and therefore you suspect that it's clunky to work with. But people who have used it seem to like it a lot

Since you're away from topic anyway....:p
Is there a possibility to change skins of smeshes with scripts? I looked over the "action" commands and also searched the forum but found nothing. I'd like - only if it's possible without too many problems - to change the windows from lit (yellow) to dark (blue) when the player frobs and puts out a candle in the room. Has anyone thought about that before?

I did look at this possibility myself when trying to spawn a smesh with scripts. The problem was that I could only spawn something with the default skin. The workaround I used was to create the properly skinned object in a blue room then transport it to where it was required, setting the old object out of world and invisible at the same time. You could certainly do something similar with window smeshes.

It's is possible, as far as I know - it's how the Painting loot turns from being painted to stolen when you frob it. A pretty simple script action too, as far as I remember.
