We had to learn it at school during the early 80's, we called it "running writing". Never used it.

I use cursive all the time because it is quicker and it's usually notes to myself. I also use it when writing letters. I don't suppose I would if writing to a younger person. My handwriting is very legible but not very pretty. When anyone says it is pretty I figure they are trying to sell me something. Girls are very precise and have a flair for it that most boys do not.
It's in no way necessary, and as Dema said, there are classes I consider important as expression that I personally would rank way above it. As an elective I would value it. As a mandate I would not. I think the times tables are important in being able to do figures in your head quickly. It also helps in knowing numbers backwards and forwards as in 6 x 8 = 8 x 6 and their relationships as regards half of the first makes half the total and if you have that then you can double it for the other amount and so forth. That also applies in reading a tape measure. I can't tell you the number of times I've had people tell me 14 and 6/8 instead of 3/4 and if they knew their relation would express it correctly.
Times tables are more important in saving time and only take a week to learn anyway. Cursive is just a lovely gesture for writing an old friend letters. I would rather that time be put towards drilling into their heads the difference between then and than.

I used to have decent handwriting, but so many years of little use has reduced it to...

Examples of my chicken scratch.. I could probably do better, but it takes so much effort. :-P
The Pilot G2 0.7 Gel is probably my favourite mass market pen, it feels so nice to hold and write with it, really effortless. Great pen to have in your EDC bag for daily needs. I also have a black Copic Multiliner SP 0.7 that is my regular go-to when writing longer notes or journal entries.

After I got used to Muji pens, it's all I use. Really appreciate the aesthetic too.

I used the Pilot G-2 exclusively for the longest time, but then found the Sharpie and gravitated toward it, but only because the ink dries faster. But, the use that I was putting it to (for work), I have now switched to a permanent marker for that, and I will probably go back to the Pilot. Sadly, I will have to use it to see if the longer drying time is acceptable. I just can't have things smearing in my line of work.
My main problem with the Sharpie is that they're inconsistent: I will get a pack of ten, and maybe two of them will leak at some point in their lifespan. That little gel insert at the top (back) side of the ink supply in the inner tube melts(?), dissolve, whatever. Also, that little ball of "glue" they put on the writing tip will sometimes leave residue that stops the ball from rolling freely, and no matter what I do, it never gets better. Maybe it's an actual flaw in the metal and not residue left over?? Either way, they have two negatives against them, but the smearing issue of the Pilot has prevented me from using them over the Sharpies.
I'll look into that other one you mentioned.. I have been a big fan of writing instruments most of my life, so that might be just what I need for personal use.

A guy who used to work in the same department as me, had amazing hand writing. That was the only redeeming thing about him. Used to work...
My cursive and printing looks awful. I keep thinking I should take it up as a meditation. I used to write first drafts by hand and then transcribe them. Had to work fast though. Sometimes I couldn't read what I wrote a few days later. My hand can't keep up with my brain.

I used to have what I would call "decent" or better than average handwriting. I took to calligraphy at an early age and really practiced. I hand-wrote several hundred invitations for mine and my wife's wedding and regretted that.. After going to college and having to write notes at a breakneck pace that still wasn't fast enough, I ended up with terrible handwriting. Now, it's just horrible. Even really trying and concentrating on doing a good job, it's just lost to me (that quality I had early in life). I can't imagine the amount of work and practice it would take now to reacquire it.

My cursive is akin to what folks call "the doctor's handwriting".
