Replying almost a year later but I was just playing this, so in case anyone else is wondering: you are meant to raise your sword in front of the library ghost, at which point he will run and open the hidden panel before disappearing.. I think this was mentioned in one of the threads in the archives, which can be a useful place to search when playing the really old FMs.

Someone's walkthru mentioned that you can raise your Blackjack as well, and this indeed works. However, sometimes it takes a few seconds until the ghost reacts.
I have looked at the setup of that cache in DromEd, and apparently, you really need to make the ghost open it; there seems to be no switch, button or anything else that can be used.

Yes, as the collector's diary says ...

I refuse to hand them (the translations) over (to the Hammerites). They are all well hidden, except for the one in the Church Library. I met Riley there and he agreed to hide it. Trouble is he's such a coward. First sign of violence and he'll hand it over. Strange, though....I thought he was dead.
... being menaced Riley the ghost will run to the wall and open the hidden safe. When you kill him (as I did in the first attempt) there's no way to open it.
