Of course none of that is to say I can't like this.

I'm quite conflicted about Pain, as I remember them from the day. On one hand, they were Swedish Metal, sort of. I'm Swedish, and a metalhead. On the other, there was quite a lot of godawful E-Type Eurodisco in there as well, perhaps not so much in this particular song. But I also love Kraftwerk, EBM, industrial, Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, Ministry. Now, this all comes down to taste. On paper, I should love Pain, mixing all the elements I should, technically, like. But for some odd reason I can't quite explain other than taste... meh. I even quietly resented the cliched name Pain. I can't blame you if you do, but it's not for me. I heard local bands that were better.

I haven't found a lot of theirs I like enough to hear more than once but Shut Your Mouth is just great. Nothing to feel conflicted about there. I would have sworn he was Cuban from his accent though.
Anyway here is one from Drive By Truckers. I don't like a lot of theirs either but this one hits home.

Now, this is an odd one for me. I love the song, but it came just about the time I was getting disillusioned with heavy metal, and was falling in love with Kraftwerk, its exact opposite and for some reason thus the enemy. On one hand, I loved Eddie's magnificent guitar work, but on the other, I also loved the sound of the Oberheim. I hadn't really thought about it until this very moment, but to me and my personal music history, this is the perfect transitional song. It sort of encapsulates the moment I gave up on heavy metal and turned to synths instead. I had never thought of it like that before. Thank you for reminding me.
[Edit]
And when I say Kraftwerk, this is the boing boom-tschak I'm talking about. I don't think any one single song ever changed my life quite as much as this one.

For some inexplicable reason, I woke up after dreaming of the rhythmic break of this song. It starts at about 1:40. I knew it was Yello, but I couldn't remember which song, so I spent a good 45 minutes trying to find it.

For those of you who don't know Yello, they were a Swiss electronic experimental pop band, and I've never heard anything like them. Fans of the Simpsons might know the song (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jJkdRaa04g) Oh Yeah as the Duffman Theme, or from Ferris Bueller, or fans of motor racing might know the song (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4QbJRAWvRU) The Race. But there was so much more to them than just novelty songs with funny noises. They did every genre imaginable, on synthesizers, before any of it was practical or common. Jazz, blues, swing, soul, samba or just plain weird-out sample crazy silliness. Boris Blank, the guy with dark hair and a silly moustache, wanted to create the world's largest sound library on his samplers. I don't know if he ever succeeded, but I'd love to take a look at his hardware. They are very much an underrated and ground-breaking act that people should know more about.

That's a perfect example of why I hate retro-sarcastic-hipsterisms, and I could not stand Always Sunny. But your mileage may vary. I grew up in the 70s/80s, and I didn't enjoy much of it at the time, so I'm not overly elated when it's exaggerated for nostalgia jokes.
Granted, quite a lot of what was pretty good at the time was also ridiculous, but retro-sarcasm does not play well with my memories of it at the time. It was embarrassing enough being there, at the time, and I don't need reminding, thank you. I just embrace the things that were actually good, such as some of the music, and try my best to ignore all the other crap. I find it quite difficult to endure stuff like the Goldbergs and all other similar things that are so painfully 80s retro, but just the very very bad parts of it. Back in the 90s, when -I- thought everything was horribly 70s retro, I was just waiting for 80s retro. I hadn't yet figured out it's always the worst bits that get repeated endlessly. But now I know.

This week I've been going back to my old blues stuff. I still love this:
