It has a few retro hooks in it. I've been repeating this one a lot as of late. Thankfully for the sanity of everyone else, I've got headphones. X>

The whole concept album is worth listening, but here's one song on Hadestown that absolutely nailed it:

And our work is never done
And the war is never won

Yeah, it somewhat caught me off guard too. I was already sold on the concept as I love Greek mythology and having that particular story set in the Great Depression era was intriguing too, so when I sat down to listen to the album I thought, "Yeah, it's alright, I'm going to have a good time with this." That song, however, really stands on its own. It has great pacing, Hades's voice (Greg Brown) is pitch perfect, and the song has a very nice structure in the way it progressively builds upon itself through the call and response verses of Hades and the chorus. And that's not even mentioning how well it sells what a great manipulator Hades is and how the company town people are desperate to believe him.
There are other good songs on the album too, of course, and the story itself is really well told.

This song is depressing, desperate, and the distorted vocals really sell the distress the speaker experiences. First time I heard the climax it felt like cresting over a barren landscape of what was once a lived-in environment. That's not what the song's about, as far as I know, but it still works in my opinion.

I found this album years ago through a paleoartist who drew his interpretations of each individual song, and the rest is history.
