CS has that "limited number of activations" DRM... - by EvaUnit02

Here's the (
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=725715&page=2) relevant thread on the activation.
Quote:
I hit the limit that you can use to activate CS. It seems you can only reinstall CS 5 times (had to reinstall/format computer). So just a heads up to everyone, if you are going to reinstall CS make sure its worth it because after 5 times, like me, it wont let you start the game and say a limit has been reached. Just a warning.

Even better....
"For issues about the activation limit please contact STEAM support, because
they are responsible for the download version."
Deep Silver wants us to contact Steam, Steam wants us to contact GSC, GSC doesn't give a fuck and won't respond. Looks like we have to buy the game again if we still want to play it. :o

As far as I know, limited activations is a wholly Steam's affair.

Archive the "installed" game files to a DVD-R or two, and use that backup instead.
Really this whole situation is f**king pathetic. Torrented copies of the game likely are cracked and have this removed anyway. So it's only legitimate, paying customers that are getting bent over here.

You may confuse people with the petition, because CS products released by GSC World Publishing, and as well by Deep Silver, i.e. physical copies, don't have any online/limited activation based protection.
You should specify that petition is about Steam's release only.
I may ask on your behalf in the thread where devs answer questions if GSC has anything to do with the activation based protection of Steam version. I see your disappointment, my suggestion is to use crack for retail version until the limit is removed, I guess it should work with Steam version too.

Thanks 242, please do ask about the Steam version.
I've read that GSC more or less ignore virtually all tech support mail from their non-Russian speaking customers.

Did you send message via this form - (
http://cs.stalker-game.com/en/?page=support) ?
PS: on the Steam page where you buy the game ((
http://store.steampowered.com/app/20510/)) there is the note: This game is limited 5 activations. For details, please see the Steam support page.
Could you please edit the thread title to specify it's about Steam version only?
Zygoptera on 23/9/2008 at 21:21
Yeah, editing the initial post would be nice as it certainly doesn't seem to effect non-Steam versions (cheers, Hidden_7) and it almost certainly ain't Tages causing it.
I think limited activation DRM is shitty, but whatever is said about it really needs to be accurate or perfectly legitimate concerns can get dismissed as not being well founded.

That disclaimer was added a number of days after the release. It certainly wasn't there when the product was offered for pre-order. Ditto for the Steam releases of the Crysis series.

I tried editing the thread's title and I didn't have the privileges. I have edited the OP's body though.

Someone answered (but not developer) that Deep Silver (publisher of the Steam version) was contacted many times already about this matter. Deep Silver answered that if developer would take some actions to remove the limit, it would be removed. In the same time, Deep Silver say that it's distributor (i.e. Valve) should decide matter about activation limit. Valve say that they have nothing to do with the protection. So, at least from his words, Deep Silver point finger at Valve and GSC, Valve deny, and GSC keep silence.

In that case you have good reason to demand refund, because it's cheating when they don't inform about the limit when you buy. Logically, the refund has to be provided by seller i.e. Valve, because THEY had to inform, you buy the game on their page, and it's their own matter how they will settle the affair with Deep Silver and GSC.
