I agree with Alias here. The shadows in DX could be misleading. Once I was standing in complete shadow when one of the NSF spotted me. And drawing your weapon doesn't really tell you how lit you are. In certain shadows, if you move your head around, your weapon moves with it. At certain angles, your weapon is completely in shadow, at other angles, your weapon is well lit, even if you're standing at the same spot.
And I agree with ICEBreaker, certainly you notice these kinda things in DX and Thief, but as for DX 2, and Thief 3, we really don't know enough to say. In future games, if shadows are caused by lighting (as opposed to "placing") like in real life, then it would be easy to tell whether or not a shadow would be dark enough to hide in.

a percentage meter of visibility seems interesting.. and if it could be turned off or on, or modified to a light gem to the player's options, would probably make everyone happy.
