Just make it an option for those who want it.
End of discussion. :cheeky:

I don't really think Deus Ex needs a visibility gem. Sneaking in Thief was more than anything else about Garrett's talent for hiding in the shadows. Since that was just about his only consistent advantage against all the various nasties in the game, the player needed to know just how much concealment the shadows were providing at any given time.
However, since sneaking in Deus Ex (and assumably, in Deus Ex 2 as well) is more about staying behind cover and out of the enemies fields-of-view, you really don't need information on the shadows as much as you do in Thief. Furthermore, while sneaking can get you through most all situations in Deus Ex, it's more of an option than an actual requirement. Where Garrett's best option if he was noticed was to run and hide until the guards gave up, JC stands a pretty good chance of just eliminating whatever threat he's brought on himself.

Yeah, but only because you had no visibility gem. I think they hoped you would be able to hide in shadows.
And in DX2 I think (and hope) that sneaking will be just as valid a way of progressing as shooting, or any other way you might dream up that works.
And the thread lives on!!!

Hmmm!:nono:
Deus Ex really needs a crystal of visibility!
How else can you see if a guard sees you or not?? It's just very usefull!

Farewell!

There is no need for something as crude as the crystal of visibility in DX2. How dark the shadows are, is a clear indication of how hidden you will be. There will be no need for a light meter.

I'd still like some light-level indicator. It doesn't have to be a copy of thief's, It can be a percentage at the side of the screen. 100= total darkness and 0=total visibility.

If you ever played Thief, you would know that there are times when you appear to be in a brightly lit area, but the gem tells you that you are in the dark and there are times when you appear to be in a dark area, but the gem tells you that you are in the light. The same thing happened to me all the time in Deus Ex. A visibility gem will tell you what the computer is thinking and not just what appears to be. Not all parts of Deus Ex were properly programmed to accurately let you know how much light there was in a given spot. The same will undoubtedly happen in Deus Ex 2 and a light gem will solve this problem and allow people that want more stealth to have it (Deus Ex had a lot more stealth than most First Person games with guns, but not as much as I would have liked). If you feel the gem lowers the realism, then they can make the gem's presence and optional thing (having the gem in a corner instead of right in the middle would also help people ignore it if they wished).

What you said might be true for Deus Ex and Thief 1 and 2, but it is certainly untrue for Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3. Special attention has been given to shadows. This is one of their proudest features which they showed off at E3. So the varying degrees of shadow is a direct indication of how well hidden you would be.
