Did anyone else here play this? This was mainly developed by Crystal Dynamics, but also Eidos Montreal, and I'm kinda curious to see what EM is up to when not making Deus Exes or Tomb Raiders. I've heard rumblings on twitter that this is KINDA GOOD NOW in singleplayer, so since it's in the game pass right now I decided to give it a spin and here's WOT I THINK.
The opening sequence is set on A-DAY, Avengers Day, which is some kinda themepark celebration of the Avengers / unveiling of new experimental technology that's just itching to go haywire. You play as young Kamala Khan who is SUPER into the Avengers and you run around playing fairground games and winning comic books and having improbable meet cutes with all the Avengers somehow. Then the Golden Gate bridge blows up and the Avengers spring into action. You play as all of the Avengers in turn in this sequence. Iron Man feels terrible since his movement speed has been nerfed to be on par with everyone else, so they got him flying around with his JETBOOTS but only moving at the same speed as Black Widow can run since all these folks need to be more or less on par with eachother for multiplayer purposes. :p Captain America feels the most fun to play as, I'm guessing because he's pretty much in the square middle, powerwise, of this team, so his movements and attacks feel the most natural. But then he DIES so forget about EVER playing as him AGAIN! (Unless he returns somehow in what I'm sure will be a very shocking twist)
After that the story skips ahead 5 years and now we're playing as Kamala again but suddenly she has STRETCHY ARMS? It is never explained how she got this power. I know we're all tired of superhero origin stories but NOT when it's a character no one's ever heard of! SHEESH! The next few levels you play as Kamala and it all feels very Tomb Raidery. After a while she runs into the Hulk and at this point I'm actually kinda digging the story. Kamala is endearing in how she's fan-girling about every Avenger she meets, and her powers are a good fit for the Tomb Raidery gameplay.
But then the game made me play as the Hulk instead and I didn't like it and stopped playing. I'll get back to it tomorrow.

I played the open beta a year ago. It was utter shit.

With gaming time constrained, I cut multimedia franchises out of my gaming diet. They're usually derivative, often halfhearted. Even the best ones (like last generation's Spiderman) seem to remain retreads or fanfiction. I'm a firm believer in gaming's unique potential for storytelling, but in games like these the story is either a transplant or a shadow of its source.

Well yeah if you're looking for a fresh story, Spider-Man won't deliver, but the gameplay is fantastic. The best superhero game since the Batman Arkham games.
As for Avengers: ehhhh... I played a bit more as Hulk and got too bored to carry on. :| Hulk really needs much bigger scale levels, like in Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, to feel right, and this game packs him into corridors and slows his speed to a slo-mo lumbering, and just dont feel good.
