Ooops! Well a couple of times when my old pc was dying, the crashing coincided with the cable failing as well. Have you tried another one, just in case?

If your old computer is a laptop then I have seen instances where they can lock up and appear not to turn on. Removing the battery, unplugging the power and leaving them for a minute or so before powering them back up can help. If it's a desktop computer then it's probably the power supply but as others have said in either case it should be possible to take out the hard disk and get your data from it by plugging it into another computer or a USB adapter as DJ Riff says.
Best of luck - it's horrible when something like this happens.

I'm giving the desktop PC some time to gather itself, and closing my eyes and twiddling my thumbs I will expect it to correct itself :) Nah, I'll see what I can do.
On another note, I tried installing TG on the new laptop (ASUS, Win 7). It installed, I put up the TG DDFix v1.5.11, and then TFix 1.12. Probably messed something up because in between the actual install and the patching it said it would only run in windowed mode---and now it does nothing at all, but throw warnings at me: "Unable to locate or load d3dx9_43.dll".
Great.... Clearly this is a technical area I suck at! Which is weird because the thing worked fine on the PC just the original game and the DDFix, so I KNOW I have succeeded in this before. *sigh* I'll search the troubleshooting area for clues, and then uninstall, and reinstall, and try, try, try, TRY again!

Thanks for the advice and the well wishes. I really needs 'em right now....

You only need to use TFix.

You need to update your DirectX installation. And yes, nickie's right, you don't need DDFix anymore with the new Thief patch (which is built into TFix).

Thank you, guys, for all your help. You're the best!
I've already used DDFix and the TG patch. Does that mean I can't use TFix now? Another uninstall and reinstall? Well, I've been doing that all day, so another round would not kill me.
I did get the game to work, even managed to get it widescreen, but the graphics are not great. I might have made a misstep somewhere... Well, if anything, all this training should make me the best thief in the world! :D

Hello again, Summer :)
Sorry for your data loss, but if it is Thief you are mostly sobbing about, then I think it isn't so bad. These days it's extreemly easy to run Thief. Basically just install Thief 2 with the latest official 1.18v patch and then just add the 1.19 unofficial patch released just a couple of weeks ago. :D It's rather amazing. Then you just need darkloader and download whichever FM you like and play! Pretty simple, no?
Edit: Oh, I didn't know about TFix. Even simpler. :D
