My computer's done a bunk. Gone away with the dodo. Done a bust. Broken and battered and stuck and.... *sniffles*
I lost all the Thief games, plus all the mod launchers, plus like a gazillion mods, plus all the upgrades (I can't even remember one percent of them), plus all the progress I had made with them....
I need a sympathy hug, or a dozen! *sob*
I have a new laptop, and now I have to start all over again: Install the games (do they even work on Win 7?), get all the patches (where the heck did I even get them in the first place?), DL all the mods again (do I have enough disk space, or time, or patience, or memory of the good ones?)---and just try not to cry. Dang, it's not working... :(
Why me? Why can't technology last longer than measly five years? Why does everything break down? Why me...?! :grr:
HELP!!!

Well, is even the hard disk broken ? What exactly happened to your old computer ?
Anyway, this should teach you one important thing : backup your data.
For what is about the mods, patches and fan missions at least, you still should be able to download most of them.
As for the games, if you lost the discs, they can now be bought for cheap from GoG.com or Steam.

unless it has been destroyed by a nuclear explosion, it should be possible to save the data from the hard drive. and as the games don't need any reg entries, it should be perfectly possible to copy them over and play. as for new pc compatibility, check out the stickies.

Thanks, guys. I guess I just needed a pick-me-up :)
The old system froze, and now it refuses to even start. Guess it's as dead as can be... *sigh* Well, it had Vista anyway, which sucked ass with games, so the new Win7 might do a better job anyway. Gonna start DLing patches and so-forth. At least I have the discs... somewhere. Have to go rummage!

Buy a USB cradle for HDD, put your old HDD into it and download all data to the laptop. If the HDD appears as "not formatted", then use some recovery software like R-Studio or its free analog. If it's not a physical HDD failure, then almost everything can be recovered. If it is (HDD's not spinning up, emitting strange sounds, not being seen by the system at all, etc.), it can be sent to a data recovery service, but it will cost $$. If it's worth it or not it's only you can decide.

And if none of that works then yes, Thief is fine on Win7. Use TFix for Thief 1 and the new 1.19 patch for Thief 2. And there are a couple of threads about patches and the 1.19, so if you can't retrieve what you want, I'm sure I can dig them out for you.
And hurry up about it, we'd like some more reviews from you. :)

Thanks, DJ Riff, I'll see what I can do. ATM, the machine does nothing when I push the start button. Nothing.
Aww, Nickie, you're sugar sweet :D

:) Just a thought - have you tried kicking it? Last time that happened to me I gave mine a kick (in frustration) and it started again. It didn't last long but enough to copy what I wanted.

Deadly Shadows is installed---with the widescreen patch, and it's looking great! :) Now to see if the Garrettloader 1.42 works as well....
