But... Freakazoid is unmitigated focus-grouped punchline-by-committee shit.

What is this Rubicon?
AMCs newest show. It's got the acting, direction, decent writing, and some great cinematography. I just dunno if it has the story yet. Ask me again in 3 weeks, and I'll tell you what I think of it.

Reading the wiki, its list of influences alone makes me excited!
Downloading at the weekend!

This got me thinking of a few oldies:

Space 1999. Back then this was The Shit if you didn't care all that much for
Star Trek's opening. Extra coolness came from the fact that the credits also contained preview shots from the epsiode itself.

Mission Impossible. Just the music alone made you want to jump up and crawl through some air ducts to steal the bad guys' secrets. All that and episode previews too!

Creature Features. A local show from the SF bay area and Sacramento. The opening left no room for doubt that you were going to be watching a schlock horror movie hosted by a nerd. Good times.
And then there's anime. I'll second
Cowboy Bebop, but there's a few others:

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. You got your blood spattered kids licking off the blood, your kids with sharp implements, and your kids with full back tattoos. Completely appropriate for a show where the fatality rate
exceeds 100%. By a lot. Very well done.

Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. (at 20:06) Manages awesomeness in spite of the somewhat cheesy 3D. Pretty much says "robots and hot cyborgs will kick ass here". Bonus points for a theme song in Russian, English and a little bit of Latin.

Elfen Lied. My nominee for the prettiest opening in all of anime. The images are all adapted from works by painter Gustav Klimpt's "gold period", the lyrics (Latin again) are from various psalms.

It's Gustav Klimt, not Klimpt. And mixing his works with naked anime chicks and a Latin soundtrack is an example of the superficial enthusiasm for European culture that's been prevalent in Anime since the 90s. Definitely needs more angles and crosses.

That said, Elfin Lied is really good.

Pray tell, what exactly is "awesome" about a series of names appearing over a Windows screensaver?
