I just started playing Deus Ex using Shifter for the first time. I installed a laser sight on my crossbow, with my skill at trained level. The laser wanders (a lot), but the darts fly exactly where I point my cursor. Did I just waste a laser sight on my crossbow? I'd prefer the old stationary dot to a worthless wandering dot that is never correct.

It's impossible to waste a laser mod cus laser mod itself sucks in shifter.
The laser wanders a bit too in the base game, but in shifter it's pretty ridiculous unless you have the respective skill upgraded to lvl 3-4, in which case you don't really need a laser mod.
Try emailing the guy about it. I want to talk to him about a few things myself, like having the injured in medbay lie down on the beds and shannon sit on the pot in the lady's bathroom, that kind of stuff.

It's really weird the things he completely ruined. The laser change is almost as lame as 'unique weapons.' Taking out the suck is great, but adding more suck to balance it out is awful.

If you hadn't noticed, in the original game the laser was utterly broken:
you could have a pistol skill of fuckall, but the laserdot wouldn't move from your aim position (unless you were moving), and would ALWAYS, ALWAYS fire a shot exactly were the dot was. Essentially, adding a laser to your gun made weaponskills irrelevant.
Unless, of course, you added a scope as well.... in which case it went back to default behaviour, with the laser dot being no fucking help at all.
A stupid system, in other words.
Now, I'm not 100% sure how yuki altered this: the easiest way would be to make the laser jump around like a motherfucker from arbitrary point to arbitrary point (which is what your "actual aim point" does) but that's not terribly realistic: you want the laser dot to flow from point to point, not jump around like a ritalin-craving ADD mentalist. But then, this requires the game to do silly trace calcs constantly, which is inefficient and stupid.
In essence: it may still be a bit broken, but it is, at least, only "as broken", or less, than original DX.
