Drat, I was hoping to be the first crass SOB to link to a great little cartoon someone had up at Imageshack of Irwin with his wings and halo, kneeling next to a pit of Hell and fishing up a demonic creature with a stick while saying "Crikey! It's a Succubus! And isn't she Gooooogreous?"
Alas, the pic is down due to high hit rates. It was so... him.

For some reason I just never thought he'd actually die. Especially so soon. He was so good at what he did, only his friends got half eaten, not him!
It's so sad that his two little kids are now left without a father, and his wife... :( It's just so sad.
IMO, there should be way less(none at all) Steve bashing in this thread. Give the man a break, he died for goodness sake. :(
Rest in peace, Steve Irwin.

Yeah. I mean, I could understand if he was a FIGURE OF CONTROVERSY, but 'I didn't like his show', and 'He sounds very annoying' isn't a reason to piss all over his grave.

In other places around the net, I've been surprised at sheer veracity and dickheadedness (mostly from Australians, but also misinformed "animal lovers") regarding Steve's death. I mean, I've been reading from
good riddance to
bloody idiot/annoying charicature.
I mean jesus. The guy was as honest
as about his personality and he said as much in an interview once:
Quote:
"When I see what's happened all over the world, they're looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke," he said.
"And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing.
"You know, there's this... they kind of cringe, you know, 'cause I'm coming out with 'Crikey' and 'Look at this beauty'.
"Just say what you're gonna say, mate. You know, is it a cultural cringe? Is it, they actually see a little bit of themselves when they see me, and they find that a little embarrassing?
"I'm fair dinkum, like kangaroos and Land Cruisers, winged keels and bloody flies! I think we've lost all that. I think we've all become very, sort of, money people."
The guy was honest and from the heart, sure, he risked his life every time he got into the environment of a croc but he resettled how many of them into habitats more fitting? He didn't believe in tranquilisers and feared they had adverse effects on the creatures, hence he believed being able to physically move them was less harmful and so his wrestling and so on wasn't just for exhibitionism. I believe that although his antics were reckless to his own person, no animal was ever truly in danger and his respect for their awesome power and prowess transcended any possible buffoonery that people could take from his presenting.

This is sad news, indeed. I always enjoyed watching Steve whenever I could. His personality and love for animals is something that you don't find very often. Rest in peace, mate. I'm gonna miss you. :(

Imagine how many millions of people now are lashing themselves over the death of a minor television celebrity, right now. Man, the internet is a majestic thing!

I hope you guys remember me. Nicky..?
Anyway.
You may remember that Drew (fluke) lived close to Steve's zoo. Annie worked there for quite some time and Terri (Steve's wife) was a friend to a lot of the people in town (Beerwah) as was Steve. Bindi went to school in Beerwah for a while. He grew up here after all. He played footy for Beerwah. He was quite the vocal supporter at the local matches when he was in town. He was a popular guy here. Not so much for his fame, but because he didn't forget his friends as he scaled the heights. Steve Irwin was the real thing.
There are a lot of upset folk hereabouts at the moment. There are hundreds and hundreds of flowers at the entrance to the zoo. Steve's getting a state funeral too.
All this is pretty sad and a great loss. The thing that sort of brings it all back into focus for the locals are some of the typical aussie reactions going around town at the moment.
Such as:
Steve should have worn sun screen that day. He wouldn't have had so much trouble from harmful rays.
And.
He should have been wearing his RayBans.
Steve would have laughed at these. :)

Yep, we remember you Nicky and glad to see you remember TTLG. A man like Steve reminds me, and I'm sure many others, of rugged men's men like fluke.
I was down by the Glasshouse Mountains only last week there and it's fucking God's country. Hope the zoo continues his fairly proud legacy.
