I agree it's not like Christian Fundies are hijacking science class. But the worry is that kids might get the wrong idea about what counts as a valid competitor to theories like Evolution, within the paramaters of science itself. People shouldn't even be debating the merits of something there if it's not science in the first place.
Although I suppose "what science IS, and ISN'T!" would be a useful lesson to slot in there somewhere.

Yeah, I agree with that. I'd hope there's a suitably large distinction between "here's the scientific method applied to create a theory" and "here's religious faith applied to the interpretation of text to create a theory", or whatever.

I really don't understand why Christians don't use evolution to SUPPORT their creation story: the order of events is a far more similar to accepted theory than say... a spider spinning the world out of its arse.

The more intelligent ones do, but unfortunately you don't ever hear about them, you only get to hear about those christians because they're the ones being the biggist arses. And you know what they say - the biggest arse always gets the grease. Or something.

Thanks for that, living avatar of the Daily Mail.
The reference is lost on me. Is that a wacky British tabloid or something?

I'd like to take this moment to plug Steve Dutch's page on (
http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/pscindx.htm) Science, Pseudoscience and Irrationality. They can scrap the scool lesson and just send the kids there.

I'm going to be a cheeky (oh ho) bastard now then. Since the question always comes up in any thread involving wacky Islamic fundies, I shall also apply it here: why aren't the moderate Christians much more active in saying "hey dickheads, stop being dickheads"?
They probably wouldn't even run the risk of getting blown up. It's win-win!

Yes, the Daily Mail is a notoriously right-wing British newspaper that is renowned for hating asylum-seekers, immigrants, feminists, liberals, gays, Europe, socialists, single-mothers and environmentalists. During the 1930s it was a vociferous supporter of Hitler and the Nazis, having particular admiration for their anti-semitic policies, and only withdrew its support for the greatest evil the world has ever known when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia.
You can get an idea of what it's like with this rather spiffy (
http://www.qwghlm.co.uk/toys/dailymail/) Daily Mail Headline Generator, which is supposed to be a parody, but is actually frighteningly close to the truth.
