The bitmaps thing is where you add the textures folder and subpaths isn't it?
I checked over that and the preferences where you select DirectX 8.1.
I created the environment variable as a system variable, not a user variable since only I use that computer, does it matter which one you use?

I always created the user variable, I don't know what's the difference. The documentation isn't specific about that, but I assumed the first field is correct. Since it worked, I haven't even thought about setting it up elsewhere ;) And yes, you must add the Textures folder and subfolders to the bitmap/photometric paths.

I reinstalled Max and configured just as the tutorial says and it still shows the texture with normal map over it in the material browser.
Also when it started up it said there was a "dual class ID of Actor X" or something. I had that before but with the dds plugin that I had for Photoshop aswell as Max.

I think that thing of the ION_ROOT variable could be avoided: I've not it in this Windows installation, and I was able now to create a new matlib in the same way:

http://dw2.html.it/index.php?softname=RegCleaner.exe&code=1231129953&q=NTgxfHJlZy1jbGVhbmVy) Regcleaner, before reinstalling it.

I think the Actor X issue might have been caused by me putting the scripts folder from T3Ed inside the Max scripts folder when you are meant to replace it instead.
I've tried the ION_ROOT thing in the 'user' and 'system' sections and neither has worked so I doubt that is the problem. I suppose anything is worth a try, though.

Maybe it would be better if you reinstall it all, i.e. install 3ds 5, upgrade to 5.1, apply SP1 patch for max 5.1 and then do everything as it's in official documentation (not that guide of yours). I did that many times and it works well.

Well, then that might be the thing. Use the
Thief 3 Editor Setup and Information.doc file that was zipped with the editor to configure 3dsmax instead.
And here's the SP1 patch for max 5.1 (install this one last): (

I have no such doc in the T3Ed install or in the rar that it came in.
This is it I assume :

It's the same process as the 3dsMaxConfig file I used.
Installing that SP resulted in Fraps being installed on my computer (which it already was) is that supposed to happen?

Fraps? Hell, no. Strange things are happening with your PC, really. The doc file was included in Thief3 DVD version (already patched to 1.1), I got it bundled with my gfx card.
