Quite simply the quickest and best thing I have found for creating normal maps from textures.
Note that although you can get amazing results even just starting out with a photo, if you take a little time to create even a fairly rough height map as a starting point, you will be blown away by the results.
Pay particular attention to the "Find low frequency image detail" which improves on the "flat" look of a lot of texture-generated normals, and "Analyse image for 3d shapes" for more of the above.
Best of all, it's free :¬)

This is probably more than likely the last place I should ask this but here it goes anyways. I've always read the texture posts with some disdain, as everyone always uses jargon and slang that I'm not familiar with and I'd love to know wtf they are talking about. Is it possible that someone has created a wiki/tutorial/post about how to create textures/what all the jargon means? Another way to say this is, where would a noob start with custom textures?
Edit: PS: thanks for the heads up and the info, I'm sure once I know what I'm doing this will be a god send. Especially as I'm looking into creating custom textures for a lvl.

Tell us the jargon you need and we'll translate, but it's really not as scary as it sounds.

Actually it is a public beta test of a product which is intended to be sold commercially once the 1.0 version is released. This may equate to "free" for the time being, but it doesn't look like this will remain the case for ever.

Given the quotes from some guys at EA, it's be a bit silly not to leech some of that money from them if you had the chance.

Also, the beta versions are probably worth holding on to as they'll still be useful even if the final product won't be freely available. I wonder how much they'll try and sell it for? It's difficult to tell whether they are aiming at nice and affordable or several hundred dollars a license.

The commercial release will come in two flavors:
There will be a Professional version and a non-commercial version. Price points aren't set in stone yet, but the non-commercial version will be inexpensive.

Not necessarily -- I'm pretty sure at least some of them are time limited, possibly all of them.

Sorry for my ignorance but what is the purpose to bump the images?
It's not enough to insert it directly as DDS in the matlibs?

It makes the texture look three dimensional by allowing lights to create shadows based on the texture detail.

I imagined it.... ok, thanks for the explanation
