My game has always been prone to the odd crash to desktop/freeze, but it seems to be more frequent now. What should I do to try and reduce the frequency of the above? Should I reinstall the game, or reinstall or change the operating system?
I have Windows 98 SE on my machine. It has an AMD Duron 900 mHz processor. Normally, it seems to be stable and trouble-free. I have Norton Utilities and I run the System Check/WinDoctor functions regularly, as well as antivirus and speed disk. In other words, I try to maintain my system so that it all runs smoothly. I haven't made any changes to the system recently, other than maintenance, using the above utilities.
Any suggestions?

Any plugins?
What's the weather been like? Has the machine got good airflow? When my starts crashing often usually heat's to blame, but I don't suppose your machine gets too hot anyway...

Are there many (or any new) memory-resident programs that you're running? Turn them all off.
Have you recently upgraded the game with a patch or expansion?

Heat's often a culprit for me. I sometimes wind up running the air conditioner as much for the CPU as for myself. :)
Another thing that may help - hit Start - Run - MSCONFIG and look in the Startup Programs tab. Investigate and identify all the crud that's autorunning. Reduce it as far as is practical.
Get X-Teq X-Setup (free download, look for it via Google); it can help in the same task and also lets you tweak other stuff too.
Finally, Ad-Aware may help by letting you zap other bits of crud code that have snuck their way onto your machine.

I have the same problem Ania.

Scarily, I too have this problem. Was going to post a thread about it, but it seems Ania beat me to it :cheeky:.
Anyway, all that happens with mine is that Morrowind randomly crashes. My theory behind it is that some sort of... cache is getting too full. As it only happens after i've loaded several new areas, if you get me. So if I stay in the same area, it doesn't crash because only that area has been loaded. I've found it can be cured by loading a game - this clears all data, and starts anew. The problem being that on my cack PC, this takes forever usually, and I sometimes forget.
So... does anyone know if there's a manual console command to clear all existing, unused data? It might work - as I say, i'm only theorising.
Worth a try Ania? :)
Stainboy.

Me too... it probably doesn't help that I restart my computer every... week. Or more. Heh. But I've also found that as you progress more in the game, it begins to crash more often too. Probably because of the large amounts of data it's trying to process... But I wouldn't know.

Morrowind is horribly buggy and prone to crashing. In a crazy counter to Stainboy, I often crash on reloading :D
Morrowind doesn't process more infomation the further you get in the game, as the main quest is all scripted - you can go anyway and do everything right from the start.
Anyway, Ania's problem was a sudden increase in crashing above the usual level of bugginess.

No, I mean Morrowind has to keep track of everything in each cell you've entered. Like whether or not you've dropped an item, how the item is positioned, corpses... all that stuff. So naturally as the game progresses it has to process more information depending on where you are. That's why even after beating the game the size of your save file still gets bigger.

Fair enough :) Different definitions of progress
