I researched that quite a bit before buying and the Palit consistently showed lower temps than the stock 4870, actually. Plus Palit apparently does not often produce updated BIOSes anyway. :erg:
I reinstalled the drivers and achieved the same result with a different error code (SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION in win32k.sys). At this point I'm ready to just buy a new damn PSU and see what happens.

ok, post back with results.

Will do! I'm going, I think, for the PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W. 60A on a single 12V rail? If that doesn't do the job, then it MUST be the graphics card!

this are very good psu's - as in they have the best ripple and voltage drop of any psu out there. But there are far from quite as they only come with weedy little 80mm fans, also they very exspensive compared to similar psu's - £120+ for a 750psu.

I'm open to other suggestions! Noise is not necessarily an issue, though quieter would be nice. Edit: plus Overclockers is doing the 750W for £104. I know it's cheaper elsewhere (i.e. Dabs) but I want next-day delivery to NI, which many will not do.

your setup dosent require a 750 psu btw, unless your looking at cross-fire at some point in the future. A good 600w will more then do the job, for example.
My setup
E8400 3.0Ghz overclocked@3.6ghz
Gigabyte X38_DS5 overclocked 400FSB
4GB overclocked- DDR2800@960mhz
GTX280 overclocked 648/2250
2x Seagate 320GB in raid 0
1x DVD+RW
1x Xfi sound card
1x 200mm fan
3x 120mm fans
2x 60mm fans
all running off my 4mnth old OCZ GameXstream 600w, Im maxed out but stable. I am looking to get a little extra capacity, so 700w and I want a moduler psu aswell. Drop me a PM as I have a psu you might be interested in going cheap.

Crossfire is definitely an option sometime next summer, hence my thinking about going for one as beefy as I can afford at this point without heading into silly 1000w territory. Thanks for the advice!

Great, thanks Biker! I had considered Micro Direct but for some reason they won't give me the next day option. :erg: Those last two links are fantastic though, cheers.

Call microdirect then, and they will sort it out for you over the phone.:thumb:

And amazingly the fan of this power supply was really quiet. We could only hear it when the unit was pulling its full 750 W or more. Then it started to make a lot of noise. Featuring a 5-year warranty (the product box says 3 years, but it is wrong), four video card power cables (two of them with 6/8-pin connectors) and a sufficient number of peripheral power connectors, this product is perfect for high-end users looking for a power supply on the 750 W-850 W range. And the best of all, it isn't expensive for a power supply on this power range (it costs between USD 150 and USD 160 in the US), providing a terrific cost/benefit ratio for this kind of user.
Just read the full review of the Pc Power & Cooling and I tell you what I am seriously thinking of getting one...!!!
