A lesson for you bleeding-heart liberals: interfere in the market and cows die. And taxpayers even have to pay for the privilege.
I was never a fan of agricultural protection like this; it's not like farmers/ranchers are even a powerful voting group anymore, and all it does is artificially boost the price so poor single mothers have to pay that much more to feed their kids, and that to benefit the wealthiest ranchers that get the most benefit from these things (because of how it scales). Seems to completely invert the whole welfare-thinking thing. But if you're going to do it, FFS just give the money directly to the ranchers and let them figure out what to do. Why fuck with the market while they're at it?

(ca also has a crazy ass milk pooling scheme and sets minimum prices so this is probably way less of an issue here although it's just another kind of interfering with the market)
