Could "T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age" be better than TG and T2? - by Sanctus Germanus

I can agree to some extent. When I think of T1 vs. T2, T1 meant waiting, as T2 meant action. Maybe I'm terribly wrong, but at least as I remember, the level design of T1 forced more pauses, while the more spaceious, gratious leveldesign of T2 allowed a more fluent gameplay, as if one place was ocupied by a guard, you could just move to another and clean up afterwards. Aside small variations, T1 was more claustrophobic, threatening, you had to deal with the enemy at hand and felt like getting sucked deeper and deeper into the level.
I've never thought about it that way, but yes, in T1 I had to hide from angry guards and got into tight spots more often. On the other hand, when TMA came out we were already somewhat proficient players, struggling less with the engine's possibilities and Garrett's skills which probably made the first impression of TMA less harsh than TDP's. There is this one level in TG that was a mix of the T1 mission style and the later TMA missions: Song of Caverns. The opera house layout is certainly more similar to later TMA levels. I'm still not sure whether I liked that level much; I mostly still remember it because It has one of the hardest to get pieces of loot if you don't want any NPC going to alertness level 2.

Which is why Ramirez' mansion failed.
Well, I still like it. It was a much welcome change of pace after the two really claustrophobic undead levels before it (Cragscleft and Bonehoard).

I just realized, I have never played T2 in german. T1 of course, I always loved Victoria's "
alte Geschäftsfreunde".
:D
Voice acting in the German translation of T1 is excellent. I like it much more than the English original. I've never played T2 in English myself.

[...]I’ve played a number of T1/TG FMs. All are not quite as good as T2 style FMs. Again, only my preference. [...] After thinking about the topic, I think I will search out some T1 FMs I have not played yet. Thanks for that push. :)
Imo the best of T1 fm surely beat most T2 fm, but if I had to compile an all-time-favorite-fm top-10-list, I guess most if not all of it would go to the/my top T2-fm's. T2 came out rather quick and got more love in the long run.
Yet have you checked out these T1 fm's (probably)?
Circle of Strain 2, The Secret Way, The Unseen, Shunned, Order of the Vine, Dead Night, Sweet Delight, Sepulchre of the Sinistral, Endless Rain, Lord Beilman's estate, Mystery Man, Calendra's Cisternand these?
The Chalice of Souls: Beyond The Secluded Passage, Invitation to Castle Morgoth, Circle of Strain 1, 3, Death of Garrettand these?
Lorgan's web, Geller's Pride, Shadow Politics, Augustine's Revenge, Gem's of Provenance 4I'm sure I forgot some of my favs (nearly missed Shunned of all).

Good point, might be quite the changer. The first playthrough(s) were certainly different from clearing the games on expert now, which now euqals more a blackjack (if necessary) dance than hiding in the shadows.

I like the part before, but the mansion rellay bumped the difficulty curve, so to speak.

For your own enjoyment, you really should do so! :) The available versions are almost all english and the german voice acting is really, really out of place in T2 from what I experienced so far.

I would still like to see some proof on the matter of people liking Thief 1 over Thief 2. As far as my experience goes about 70-80% like TMA more.

You're confusing superiority with equality. And so far, you're the one who is acting superior. The fact that someone discovered the game before me doesnt make them any "realer" of a fan.
This is WAY more than just "discovering a game before someone else", this game was a lifestyle for us. This is getting so stupid! What you people are missing here is so simple. Back when Dark Project first came out, the fans were *here* at TTLG. Over the course of those first 4 years or so, the people here played this game inside and out. This forum was bombarded constantly day and night with everyones finds, as we *all* figured out every last hidden nugget about this game. It was a tireless and rabid passion. You are basically saying that you are right, and the collective monster that was TTLG circa 1998-2003 is wrong.
The designers put the "level skip" in for Gold I believe, so if you use it, it was their intention. keyholing was *not* put there by the designers, so it is questionable to call it cheating. The point is, without the crazy fanatics insane dedication to this game, we never would have even discovered keyholing or prolly any of the shit we found that has kept this game alive all these years, so that new people like you can come here, thinking you have the wiki memorized perfectly, but you werent in the trenches.

The players always preferred T1-->TG-->T2-->TDS in the past
There's a search engine on this forums. Search for keywords "polls", "like"...

Well put. :D
It's only now that there's so little going on here I notice how much this "rabid passion" on Ttlg was part of the fun. And how much I miss it now.

I'm just trying to replay T2X, and I really wonder how one could even think about it being better than either of the original games' missions. Although it is amazing fan work, and the missions *are* a pleasure to play, it is buggy to the point of where you have to restart missions, linear, with tight but empty levels, lacking real difficulty settings, the authors keeping control over every action you do. There's none of the freedom of the original missions.

I've lurked TTLG since 2004 and used to post by another name at that time. TMA was my first Thief game and I used to prefer it. Now I've flipped flopped and I greatly prefer the atmosphere and feeling I get from playing TG style levels. IMO the TMA engine may be objectively better than TG, but TG is way more than the sum of its parts when it comes to mystery and atmosphere.
T2X is pretty amazing for a community project. It lacks the polish of the OMs, but it's certainly worthy of a replay now and again.

It's mixed bag of opinions. As always.
I prefer T1. It has burricks, craybeasts and a real Trickster
