Most games/Apps will not use more than 2 cores. So buying a quad is a waste of time. As the price of CPU's drops so quickly there is no point paying for a x4 core over a x2 core.
Im running the E8400 @ 4.1ghz and its more than enough for everything i do including playing the very latest games.

8800GTX is better than 9800GTX, because it has a wider memory bus. This advantage only becomes apparent at higher resolutions, otherwise they're about the same.
9800GTX is total waste of money too, as it's literally an overclocked 8800GTS 512MB (G92) with tri-SLI support. Buy a 2nd hand/cheap 8800GTX or a brand new 8800GTS 512MB (OC the latter yourself).
Don't waste your money buying a blu-ray burner now. Media is too expensive at the mo and the hardware should've improved noticeably by the time that they're economical enough.
X-Fi Xtreme AUDIO is NOT a real X-fi, it's a rebadged Audigy Value/LE/etc. Creative is trying to scam people. The cheapest REAL X-fi is the Xtremegamer vanilla.
Make sure that you get Vista x64, otherwise you won't be able to utilise all of your RAM.

If you plan on getting a GTS, get a GTS 512. It's actually a completely different card than the others in the line, and is roughly equivalent to the GTX in performance.
You know, all this 84/86/88 GT/GTS/GTX/GTO/GX2/Ultra crap really makes me long for the days when you had 3 cards in a line to choose from: The MX series for the cheap, the regular line for your average tech inclined people, and the Ultra line for those that have too much money to spend. Things were so much simpler back then. When you bought a card, you knew exactly what you were getting. None of this "oh, when you get a blah blah 8900GT, you're actually getting a card that's worse than the 8600GTXO but slightly better than the 8800GTA (which was only made to play Grand Theft Auto).
No wonder PC gaming is in a slump at the moment. You have to have a spreadsheets, a few pie graphs, and a couple hours of time for hard research just to cut through the marketing BS.

I've heard as much. But I've seen Vista 32 identify and utilize a full 4 gig of ram, instead of capping out at 3.2 gig.
