I gotta say this thread is starting to piss me off. I've been reading it and it seems like every post has either been some "Advice" all of which saying the exact same thing, deman compensation, calling po a pussy cuz it makes you feel like a tough guy, and some people who find it funny to say the word pussy in a forum. My god. Seeing as how everything that needs to be said has been said I suggest that this thread closes. Nothing good is going to come out of it.

Actually, I only did it because I liked how "the inscrutable pussy" sounds.

Oh, don't be so modest, I'm sure we can get at least a page out of mocking you.

dodging bricks when another brick came down and shattered the arm of a redwood chair that I made 25 years ago.
Up until this very post I was under the impression that Tip was a 16 year old kid.

What's the deal recently with the dumb newbs that think they're hot stuff enough to start modding around on their 3rd post? This ain't EmoJournal, if you can't stand the heat, get out. We already have our contingent of huggy-feely types.

Not so easy. It's four against one and they are, by the nature of the job, more physical people. They're intimidating. The guy throwing the bricks is the oldest of the bunch and the guy in charge, but I could sense they were all a little afraid of him. And then, believe it or not, I don't want to hurt his feelings. He's doing a dirty job for me. I need him to be on my side. It just kind of hurts that he would act like this when it would have been so easy just to move a few light objects and avoid all the trouble and that's assuming it was an accident.
I'm not convinced it was an accident that he hit the only three objects in the back yard within about ninety seconds when he thought I wasn't watching. I'm thinking psycho. A guy who goes through life domineering through subtle intimidation. A guy who's not so happy inside and this is how he takes it out on people, by pretending to accidentally damage things in the course of his work. Maybe he felt it wasn't his job to move my things. Maybe he thinks I'm a slob. I think it doesn't matter if I'm a slob or not but contractors are their own bosses. Often they don't have much formal education. They're looked down on by a lot of people so in general when you call them they know it's because now you need them. It's their chance to get their rocks of by treating your stuff like shit.
did he intimidate you into hiring him too? Did he strike you as a psycho when you hired him?

No. He was a little arrogant and he tries to keep control of my options in the conversation, but that isn't unusual among the contractors I've talked to. I've had estimates from 400 to 4000. Most won't put anything in writing and apparantly the estimate doesn't mean much anyway as they just tack on charges if they find there's more work involved than they thought. I've asked most for references but only got one. Nobody has been willing to show me their license or insurance or bank references. (this was suggested in one book to make sure the contractor is not near bankruptcy as is all too frequently the case)
This isn't a huge job and I'm finding that most contractors don't do more than one thing. That is there are roofers and plumbers and carpenters and I can't find a guy to be in charge of the whole thing. There are a lot of guys who call themselves general contractors but "their" workmen are just people they know. They don't actually work for the so called general contractor.
From what I've seen contractors are people who don't want to work everyday, don't want a boss, don't stay long with any other people. From what I've read, a lot of them have been in jail and didn't finish high school and they can get lots of jobs because the work is hard and dirty and nobody wants to do it. What I need is illegal immigrants with roofing skills.

What the FOOOCK.
No written estimates? Holy shit man. If you need anyone to do, like, anything, give me a call, k?
Fafhrd on 21/10/2006 at 05:22
and not showing you their license or insurance? They're REQUIRED to do that.
Malygris on 21/10/2006 at 05:23
Where exactly do you live that you don't have access to reputable, qualified contractors?

You should report it to the mods before it gets any further out of hand. They appreciate that sort of backup from the users.
