- Talk to the guy in charge, tell him about the damages and that you dont intend to pay. Believe it or not this isn't going to result in you getting beaten to death, and even if he was stupid enough to touch you, well now you have a case against him, and you might get your roofing done for free after all. :P
- If he's an asshole and doesn't agree with you, bill him anyways, take photos of the damaged property (probably too late for a good one though). Again, either he's going to man up about it or beat you at noontime near the flagpoll, which is highly unlikely and besides: if it's too insignificant of an amount to be taken to court, I doubt a big fuss is going to be made about it.
Stand your goddamn ground, at least an inch ffs. This world wasnt built by a bunch of people who agreed with eachother. Around here, if you let people step on you, you get stepped on. End of story.

Talking about bikies and shitting on vehicles, I once played a gig out in Sawyers Valley, on the outskirts of town in Perth. It was basically a pub owned by a local bikie gang, "Coffin Cheaters". Pretty rough gig and all, but we got through it. However, the booking agent/manager decided to catch a lift withhis friend, who happens to ride some kind of wuss model motorbike with a sidecar.
Yeh.
So when we exit the pub at the end of the night, what do we find but a group of bikies all taking turns to shit and piss into the sidecar. The rest of us who had sensibly driven cars at this stage decided to get the fuck out, leaving the two guys to deal with whatever might happen.

Fuck, this isn't a bunch of guys at a biker bar: you hired the guy, HE'S WORKING FOR YOU. The guy and his buddies take one physical step against you and they're A) going to jail, and B) losing a shitload more money paying for your hospital bills.
If you're too scared to hold him to his end of the bargain (and yes, fixing your shit without breaking other things of yours is part of the bargain) then yes, you're fucking wusstastic.
The guy's intimidating you because he obviously gets the same vibe that we do: you have no balls. Man up and tell him you're deducting for the damage to your chair at the very least, if it's so fucking irreplaceable. Nobody's saying you should go in yelling at him and threatening him with your fists of fury, just fucking stand up for what you have every right to, instead of passive-aggressively whining about it on internet.
This isn't the Sopranos, not every contractor is going to take out your kneecaps for complaining about a shitty job. And if, by some ridiculous chance, you DID hire a mobbed up contractor? Congrat-u-fucking-lations: you're a pussy AND an idiot.

Most of this could've been avoided if you'd yelled up at the guy when he broke the first thing, rather than standing around like a Dresden firefighter waiting to see what else gets destroyed. There are people who are willing to do a good job and build a healthy professional reputation, and looks like this guy wasn't trying too hard to do that. Coming across as an intimidating person is probably the worst thing a contractor can do for business, if you ask me.
Anyway, you don't want to reward the guy for negligence and damage. They can hand your account over to a collection agency, but there is no way they can forcibly get money from you for deducting damage compensation. You might have to deal with brief annoyance if that happens, but if I were you, I wouldn't pay shit. If you already paid a percentage of the total fee as a retainer, then the only way you can get it back is by going to small claims court. I would just hold out on the remaining balance, and tell them to f- off. It sounds easier said than done, but that's what it takes to protect your right as a consumer.

I gotta say this thread is starting to piss me off. I've been reading it and it seems like every post has either been some "Advice" all of which saying the exact same thing,deman compensation, calling po a pussy cuz it makes you feel like a tough guy, and some people who find it funny to say the word pussy in a forum. My god. Seeing as how everything that needs to be said has been said I suggest that this thread closes. Nothing good is going to come out of it.
