There's been talk sbout needing a contest to give the T3Ed community a jump start, and I completely agree. Since it looks like Komag's contest won't happen until July, here's something little to keep us occupied:
***The T3 Small FM Contest***
Basically, you must make a mission with only one load zone (map file) and using no custom resources. Whatever the community votes is the best one will win.
The contest will run from Saturday 4 June until Saturday 16 July - that's six weeks.
Here are the rules (they may change before the contest starts)
Entries must only have one map file (this doesn't include the Entry map, which is needed to play missions from the main menu).
Entries must not use any custom static meshes, textures or sound files - only the stuff that came with the game. The reason for this is that not everyone has a copy of Max 5.1 or sound editing software - it makes it fairer. You should also not modify the gamesys (though you can do what you want with concretes in your map) so that the missions can all run with the gamesys from a fresh T3 install.
You are allowed to include as many custom readables as you want.
The missions can have any setting or style - it's completely up to you.
Also, custom trigger scripts are allowed; hopefully the distribution of them will have been sorted out by the closing date.
Entries should all be in (though I don't know where 'in' is yet) by Saturday 16 July.
The missions will not be *judged* as such, instead people will vote for their favourite in the forum.
The prize is... well, there isn't one yet, and I'm afraid I can't supply one. If anyone around here is kind enough to provide a prize I'll be eternally grateful, but if not, the winner will still be able to say they won the first T3Ed contest.
If you think you'll take part, post in this thread, and get designing!

I'll give it a shot. Can I start the preliminary stuff (story, planning) now or does the entire process have to take place during the five week period?

Not a bad idea, Rantako. I'll stick this thread for now as we see what sort of response there is.

I dunno if I'll be able to finish one considering all the work I've got ahead of me, but i'll try it nonetheless...it'll be good practice since I haven't officially made a Thief fanmission yet.
And it'll be fun. :D

I'm in. I can only start work on it after the start date, but that's not true of everyone. Doesn't Komag usually keep the exact rules a secret until the start date to stop cheating? Not that I mind - I'm in for the fun of it.
One thing though. One load zone is potentially pretty large. Don't know if you can call it a small FM. Do we need a size (volume) max?

It's true that one load zone can be quite big, but given the timescale I don't think anyone would do a good job on a mission that filled the load zone, as the work required is quite considerable.
In any case, this is just a bit of fun. If a few people can produce a mission that is enjoyable to play, that will be a good result.

This is exactly what we need. People are getting discouraged with T3ed because we haven't seen many results yet. If a few missions, even small ones, are released, people who haven't really been able to use it yet (like me, for example) will be inspired to start, and maybe the whole thing will finally take off.
You should probably let people start building now, if restricting time means fewer entries. We need as many as we can get.

I dunno if there's one already up, but why don't we start a T3Ed chatroom so we can help each other out and fire off a few ideas while we're building our FM's?
Even though we're supposedly in competition here...it couldn't hurt. ;)

Why no custom triggerscripts? Without the ability to use custom scripts, the maps will have to be very simple with no interactive elements or game logic that there aren't any existing scripts for. One of the biggest hinderances would be the inability to do anything involving objectives. There are a lot of stock scripts, but it would take a lot of digging and unnecessary work to try to shoehorn them into whatever scripted event you have planned, as opposed to just creating them yourself quickly.

Primarily, ease of distribution. The community doesn't have a FM installer yet, so this will assure everyone can participate or enjoy the missions if they desire, since it should just be map files.
Although, do we need scripts even to simply end a level (conditions for victory)?
