Hello everyone,
It has been a while- but I am back (I used to post a lot on the MW forum and that sticky thread at the top of the MW hints and spoilers- I spawned it!). I am having endless internet problems at home (currently down to 21 K bps dial-up- I hate BT!)
However, I have an oblivion question. I decided that I wanted to change my char's name- no prob, you'd have thought- just type showracemenu into the console, change the name and that's it.
Oh but no. After this simple and non-cheating operation, my stats and skills went berserk. Some went up. Others down- the minor skills I have been cultivating went down a lot (alchemy from 48 to 7!). In the menu where the list of your achievements etc is displayed the 'skills increased' went from several hundred to zero. Argh! And I lost all my progress in the progress to next level bar, and the skill progress bars.
Is there anything I can do without having to restore everything through the console? I tried editing the savegame (just replacing my old name with the new one wherever it occurs- only appears twice in the savegame file), but then it tells me that the save is version number 34.125 (IIRC) and the game is v. 0.125, and it won't load.
Incidentally, originally I tried to edit my appearance slightly (just a change of hairstyle/colour ) as well as changing the name and all the above happened. I then just changed the name and still trouble.
I went back to my old save in the end.

Hey :p I'm back as well...with no answer to Ania's question, just to say Hi, and complain that Oblivion won't run on my PC full stop. So no fun for me until I can afford an upgrade... :(
Good luck anyway, Ania...hope you manage to restore all your stats (sent you an email a few days ago, btw, hope you picked it up?)

showracemenu and the birthsign & class console commands are known to have these kinds of problems. It would be far easier for you to restart and pick the name you want than to change it and fix your attributes and skills afterwards.

I've tried and had the same result as well. You're more or less stuck now. Perhaps one day someone will make some mod to enable an easy name change without consequence. But that day is not today.
Atleast you didn't realize your character had FAT CHEEKS after three days of playing. Arrgh.

So, you're saying that your character has junk in the trunk? I understand that Nords really dig that sort of thing...

Face cheeks, Peeperstorm. Face cheeks. :nono:

Thanks everyone. Looks like a prolonged session with the console, or give up on name and hairstyle change.
Or maybe I should start a new game? I kept putting off going through oblivion gates, but of course the monsters get harder too, so now I have several xivilai coming at me as soon as I cross the gate, and I promptly get killed. Should have done it when it was just imps...
