As one commentator on the CBC observed - if the object of the worm is commercial exploitation then the originators of the virus may wait to activate it at a time when people's attention is not focused on the problem (you can shear a sheep many times but you can only skin it once).

But it seems to me that if commercial exploitation was the objective, allowing any sort of advanced publicity would reduce or possibly eliminate any advantage you had in the first place. Unless anyone can imagine how increased vigilance might aid the creator's ebil plans, :ebil: I'd guess it's just mischief.
