So... what's the harm in turning down the difficulty then? Does doing so also turn down the "David Lynch style horror experience"?
It goes from Black Lodge to Log Lady, yes.

There's nothing egregiously difficult about the SH's if you play them on normal - well, except SH3's final boss fight, which was a gigantic pain in the ass. And that trademark surhor clunkiness Zeeb's no doubt decrying. SH4's unkillable ghosts are also a goddamn irritation, but I would've been okay with them if the rest of the game was good enough to offset that -- it wasn't.
Anyway, what I'm saying is they're balanced enough to maintain tension without making you die horribly very often (if at all), so especially if it's your first time through, don't do that. A bit late for everyone here, I guess, but you never know.

Fair enough, I still want to play through SH3 again completely. I'm still putting puzzle difficulty at low again though.

This may not be a proper example, but in the Paradox grand strategy games, Victoria 2 & Crusader Kings 2 are the two I play, there's not really a "difficulty" per se... It's more like you can choose to play either easy countries or hard countries. And I tend to pick easier countries. But that's more because those are the powerful countries where you can actually lug your weight around and make things happen. When you're a small "difficult" country, you can't actually do very much most of the game. That said, I usually don't pick the most powerful/"easiest" countries either. I'll pick maybe one of the 5-10th place countries. Then you still have to scrap a little to move up in the world.

What games or genres do you typically play on easy?
Most of 'em these days, aside from eventual Deus Ex replays, Bethesda Gameā¢ and the the odd exception where rules change in a way that interests me. For instance I spun up NWN recently and wanted to play on Core Rules for AoE friendly fire and full conditions, but the henchman "AI" made me reconsider.

UFO, Jagged Alliance 2. They are hard enough by default, and I'm not that good at tactical games.

Actually there's one I always play on easy. The original X-COM's.
I've tried on harder difficulty settings in the case of TFTD but it was just INSANE.

TFTD difficulty is kind of bullshit in the first place. Apparently, people complained that the first one was too easy, so they overcompensated.

Funny thing is it was easy because of a bug that reset the difficulty whenever you loaded a save game.
