My friend's computer is running extremely sluggishly, though I checked the disk for errors, defragged it, and checked for viruses/adware/spyware. I think it started after he tried to install a game. What should I try? There's enough hard disk space and RAM operate.

My fave trick of old for XP is to run msconfig, untick everything from the list of start-up programmes that isn't anti-virus, uninstall anything that I do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful and reboot. I'm blissfully ignorant of Vista or later I'm afraid - these days I just replace Windows with Ubuntu and be done with it.

Along similar lines, I prefer using (
http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/) HijackThis to do an initial sweep. You need to be a bit careful - it's a tool and does not stop you disabling something you may want later. It's common for people to post a log from this to a malware forum to receive advice (see the FAQ entry "What can I do with a HijackThis log file?").
